Tried to reply Mario 64 last year on the Switch and I just couldn’t put up with the horrendous pop in. It’s best to leave that game and your memories of it in the past.

  2. James Ian Hutchison on October 11, 2021 at 8:12 am

Can’t believe you missed out Gran Tourismo. Japanese game developers take vehicle based games *very* seriously with an obsessive attention to detail. Ace Combat too. But my shouts are Tenchu 1-3 for a completely different approach to the stealth genre and the PS3 era of Armoured Core games. Like Gran Tourismo but with big robots and guns that fire bullets the size of transit vans. 🤩

  3. Vinni Amsterdam on October 11, 2021 at 8:15 am

  4. Robert Harrison on October 11, 2021 at 8:18 am

  8. Paul Shannon on October 11, 2021 at 8:24 am

Hmm, is someone watching Rob on Playstation Access?

  9. Chris H on October 11, 2021 at 8:25 am

ya… Dark Souls is polluting game fraanchises and devs I normally like. I wish FromSoft would just go back to Armored Core and Shadow Tower.

  10. AceO Blade on October 11, 2021 at 8:26 am

the worst par there is Yakuza not being #1

  11. Dingus McGillicutty on October 11, 2021 at 8:28 am

    You forgot Disgaea.

  12. DRCEQ on October 11, 2021 at 8:30 am

Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are two games that I have never wanted to play, and have no desire to ever play.

  13. Ms. I love Big Bear Cats on October 11, 2021 at 8:30 am

Personally, I’d say that FFX and FFXII were easily the best titles of the series. I can see why they added VII instead though. It made history

  14. The Kwaiser on October 11, 2021 at 8:30 am

Tokyo Jungle will be always be a personal favorite.

  15. Awesome Gamer on October 11, 2021 at 8:31 am

Yakuza 5 came out on 05/12/2012 in Japan. yes worldwide it was release in 2015 , that’ is a full 3 years they were playing it before the rest of the world.

  16. Hokuto Shinken- Chris Armstrong on October 11, 2021 at 8:34 am

How about a list of Best Japanese Anime video games. My number 1; Fist of the North star: Lost Paradise.

  17. SAKOTA ATOKARY on October 11, 2021 at 8:35 am

There are no elves in the legend of Zelda. They’re clearly referred to as “Hylains”.

  18. C Man on October 11, 2021 at 8:36 am

Wow, this list plus my own personal honerable mentions (YS, the Trails series, Nier series, and Bayonetta) shows me just how much better the East is when it comes to gaming. The west has Rockstar, and…. I guess just Rockstar lol.

  19. Steven Kasten on October 11, 2021 at 8:37 am

Playing Yakuza 5 right now, it’s a great series

  20. Jazzifizzle No1 on October 11, 2021 at 8:38 am

Persona 5 Royal is what I would’ve chosen for this list tbh

  21. Gavin Sumner on October 11, 2021 at 8:40 am

Monster hunter didn’t really avoid home consoles; didn’t the series have releases on Wii, Wii U and Switch (yes I’m aware Switch is a hybrid and not a 100% home console) before World was released?

Where’s Silent Hill or Ace Combat?!

  24. Ali Al Mohsin on October 11, 2021 at 8:50 am

    Where’s Loco Roco?!

  25. Sam Dee on October 11, 2021 at 8:50 am

Do the same for western please.

  26. Smashville Viking on October 11, 2021 at 8:51 am

You’re just naming games that are popular in the West. None of these are essential. What about Ys, or other games that hardly anyone knows about? The games you named have been played by most people.

  27. Gavin Smiley on October 11, 2021 at 8:51 am

10 solid picks. That being said, Chrono Trigger!

  28. Johnathan Cloete on October 11, 2021 at 8:53 am

I can hear Jules screaming from Wales about how Dynasty Warriors isn’t on the list

  29. Alexander Chavez on October 11, 2021 at 8:55 am

Highly disagree with a Pokemon game not being on this list and a Resident Evil/Silent Hill game not being on the list. Pokemon is one of the most famous series of all time and was a huge part of bringing Japanese games to America. Resident Evil/Silent Hill are the backbone for survival horror so they definitely deserved a spot on this list. I disagree with the Persona, Dark Souls and Monster Hunter. They are great games and I’ve played them all but two of them should have been sacrificed for those two more deserving titles. Persona is just far too niche to say everyone should play it. Dark Souls and Monster Hunter take a special type of person as well so I think it’s wrong to say everyone should play it while Pokemon/Resident Evil are easier to pick up but just as great in quality at their peaks

  30. sonic65101 on October 11, 2021 at 8:55 am

I would pick Persona 3 Portable over Persona 4 Golden.
And I’d recommend the entire 7th Dragon and Etrian Odyssey series.

  31. ZlothZloth on October 11, 2021 at 8:56 am

Also Shadow Hearts: Covenant, if you like some comedy in your games, and if you can find the thing.

  32. WITH LOVE, MAY. on October 11, 2021 at 8:57 am

damn i was HELLA surprised to see Persona 4 instead of 5. like not even meant in a bad way, while i didn’t like 4 much i know that it’s fame is why we have 5 – it’s just usually when persona is in a video, it’s 5 and despite P5 being my absolute favourite game it felt like a change of pace ^^

Katamari Damacy, We Love Katamari, Katamari Forever.

  35. Mustafa Pop25 on October 11, 2021 at 9:00 am

Yakuza 0 is one of the best prequels i have ever played
    Truely a masterpiece
And ties everything in an awesome way not many prequels managed to remotely do it
    Above all that
They gave us the inception of goro majima which is to me one of the best , well written and wholesome anti hero i have ever seen
Dude Stole kiryu’s thunder to me
I never looked at him the same after 0
Such an awesome yet an underrated character that being said
I wish we can get a spin off game bout him
    That would be chaotic

  36. Psyonikx on October 11, 2021 at 9:00 am

    Katamari Damacy.

  37. Meme Iselfaneye on October 11, 2021 at 9:00 am

I just wish Yakuza Kiwmi 2 could have still had the 0/Kiwami engine, those were the absolute best. The Dragon Engine from 6 adds some weightiness, but just cuts out way too much, and also becomes stupid block heavy from enemies, able to break almost any combo. Yakuza 2 had previously been the best Yakuza game, so Kiwami 2 had a chance to wrestle that title back, but the engine dropped below even the remake of 1.

  38. WhatCulture Gaming on October 11, 2021 at 9:01 am

You gotta love the cosmic hilarity of writing about how "2D Metroid is on pause", only for Metroid Dread to be announced the week of this video going up!

One moment, gonna write about how "Splinter Cell is never coming back"

  39. Valloth on October 11, 2021 at 9:01 am

Person 3 FES, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy 8 (I never liked 7), Dark Souls, Legend of the Dragoon, Dragon Quest 8, Monster Hunter World: Icebourne, Nier: Automata, Yakuza 0, Fire Emblem: Awakening.

I’m sorry but FF7 was not as good as everyone says. How it has got this much attention and spin offs is BEYOND ME. Both Eigth and Nine were better. By far.

  40. Big Grand on October 11, 2021 at 9:04 am

I feel like Kingdom Hearts, Silent Hill 2, the first Resident Evil and Aminal Crossing are pretty important ones to check out if you want to see how Japan does these genres different from the west.

  41. robert johnson on October 11, 2021 at 9:06 am

Is it weird if I said I played or have all of the games mentioned😊

  42. Bfitzgerald82 on October 11, 2021 at 9:06 am

How is Chrono Trigger not on this list? The creative genius that combined to make that game is once in a lifetime!

  43. Minalia on October 11, 2021 at 9:06 am

The suikoden series is always overlooked. Suikoden 2 is pure gold!!!!

  44. Михаил Дмитриев on October 11, 2021 at 9:06 am

Drop Mario, Pokemon and Zelda and add Danganronpa, Nier and Trails of series. Don’t get me wrong – Nintendo games are fine if you are 4-5 years old, but i doubt that’s the case for WCG viewers.

  45. AlexandDevinVids on October 11, 2021 at 9:07 am

Didn’t know a lot of these games were Japanese.

  46. Bluestar43 95 on October 11, 2021 at 9:08 am

At this point who hasn’t played Mario 64? It’s one the greatest 3D platformers of all time that set the standard for future 3D platformers

  47. BoondockRoberts on October 11, 2021 at 9:09 am

honestly I don;t think Final Fantasy 7 aged well like 6 or Chrono Trigger does.

  48. Jacob Rice on October 11, 2021 at 9:09 am

I feel like making a list of essential Japanese games is like making a list of common household items made in China- It’s all of them…

  49. Tats Sacs on October 11, 2021 at 9:10 am

Dislike. If the list was “influential” rather than essential then i would understand why FF VII was on the list. FF VI is more essential. And they really forgot the king of jrpgs. Chrono Trigger.

  50. That JRPG Bro on October 11, 2021 at 9:10 am

Persona 3 walked so Persona 4 could briskly jog so Persona 5 could run and so Persona 6 could run a 4k marathon
