Indeed, phone has better image stabilization, even better than full frame Sony cameras
Also if you don’t like your current phone’s camera, you can pick up a cheap international one like the Pocophone F1 that might not work well on most US carriers, but works excellently for taking pictures and videos.

I started to use my old cellphone a few months ago, it has some nice video and photo quality (1080p and 1080p 60fps on videos and 23MP on photos), it’s a Sony Xperia X Compact and left my actioncam for other things (like going underwater or for when is a little dangerous to use a cellphone). 😁

Any recommendation for an inexpensive but passably usable mic for a cell phone specifically a Google pixel XL? Could a lapel attached mic work well or am I better off getting a mic that attaches to my gimbal?

You helped me choose the FDR x3000 over the Gopro 6 recently, I believe carrying both a smartphone and an action cam for vlogging is optimal, as you said, they have great synergy, the cellphone is more fragile, and you don’t want to drain the battery.
Both are situational, I discovered a little trick you can do with the smartphone. If you are in a crowded store (I live in Japan) and worry about annoying people with your camera, you can just wear some headphones and pretend to be in a videocall, more covert than with your action cam.
The one big Advantage with the S8 and S9 series Samsung is because they have the dual camera you can either do no depth-of-field or you can do a depth of field and just tap on what you want in focus and it can use the two lenses to adjust for that
I totally agree, a phone can be used in place of a regular camera now days. I own a Note 8 and love the 4 k quality of both photo and videos.
For me smartphones haven’t replaced my dslr but I can understand why it has for others
what selfie stick would you recommend which has the strongest grip of the phone? Do you know any that lock in the phone onto the selfie stick instead of the loose spring holder?

My YouTube Channel features a lot,of low light situations (Casinos) I use my IPhone X strictly & think it’s better than my GoPro

Hey TEDD, did you ever try the Removu K1 for Vlogging? It kinda does what you want and is not all that bad indoors when recording @ 4k / 30

personally , a high end smartphone has a more sophisticated image processing than an action cam, physical and electronic image stability….twin mics, noise cancelling…and the ability to stream over network…and just the ease of use…..even in low light scenarios……hook up a power bank and a selfie stick, u got yourself a perfect light weight device….especially for the IRL streamers on twitch 👍
I would just get a cell phone. It has a great camera, but that is only the beginning. You also have a movie player, music player, internet browser, gaming device, and so much more. An action camera is ONLY a camera.
