Apple says don't use a webcam cover and we agree: Here's why

Apple recently released a report urging users to stop closing their MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro with a cover over the camera because it might damage the laptop’s screen. But what if you’re worried about hackers spying on you through your laptops camera? Is there anything to be worried about?

scotch tape works great, it blurs the image beyond recognition while still letting light through. Wish there was a hardware way of killing the microphone which is just as invasive as the camera.

I got a Mac, and had one of these over the cam, and my bag was stuffed, and apparently not only was my screen left jacked up, but the motherboard was damaged too. I was hella pissed! I had only had the f’er for only two weeks, glad I had accidental cover!

  6. SLACKPLAN9 on December 21, 2021 at 11:49 am

use a camera cover which is more like a vinyl reusble sticker. So, I can remove it when I use my camera. It will not damage my screen.

So the choice is ambience lighting or covering up

  9. Nathan Kellert on December 21, 2021 at 11:53 am

Here’s a fact. Macs are thousands of times are less likely to be hacked than a windows computer. Why? Simple! Windows has a vastly larger market share. So, if you are looking to maximize impact per time spent creating a hack, windows is the clear choice. It’s also the easier operating system to take advantage of. More hackers on windows means more widely known vulnerabilities amongst the community. Now there are specific reasons Mac has less vulnerabilities in general but for now, the numbers game is the biggest reason windows is more likely to be hacked or receive a virus.

I use a larger screen with my laptop connected through HDMI. And laptop lid remains shut. So no chance of being hacked.

  11. Velly JaTT on December 21, 2021 at 11:56 am

Or you can remove it when you shut your laptop.

If they want to see a guy staring at the screen with a tired look for hours then close the laptop, they can hack mine anytime

Some other laptop companies are just honest like "yea we cant guaruntee your security" so they build a cover into it. apples straight up dumb not admitting it. especially after snowden

Google builds a physical switch for Google Nest to disconnect mic.. Apple says, don’t cover your camera. Now you know who cares and who sells out their customers…

  20. MarliQQ on December 21, 2021 at 12:10 pm

Guys…Apple is not saying don’t cover your camera. They are asking you to not close your lid with a cover on. That makes sense.

As a person who keeps fish, glass and pressure points are a regular fear and discussion amongst aquarists. So this kind of fear is built in for me. 😅

I broke my Macbook Pro’s display because of the camera lid.. The lid worked just fine on the 15.6" Macbook Pro 2017 (with Touch bar) for a couple of years without any issues, but then I switched to the 16" MBP, and the same lid broke the screen on the second day of usage. I guess the 16" MBP has lesser space to adjust the camera lid..

If you use a laptop for work, there are some companies that have restrictions on photography and they may require you to have your camera covered. Its not always about cyber attacks.

  30. Matthew on December 21, 2021 at 12:17 pm

just use tape? maybe those things he’s using “break” screens idk

    1. my camera was indeed hacked/activated without my permission once. 2. i absolutely hate automatic brightness feature. 3. don’t want to accidentally turn it on in zoom meetings. conclusion: nothing will persuade me to uncover the camera.

  37. Stewart Moir on December 21, 2021 at 12:24 pm

Personally I don’t, despite understanding how you set about compromising a system and national security backdoors, because honestly I don’t care.

That being said a few comments suggested kids laptops and phones and in that instance I think it’s probably better to cover cameras, however I would hope that kids are taught about being safe online etc.

  38. Levi on December 21, 2021 at 12:25 pm

The chances of you actually damaging your screen is unlikely and who cares of the ambient like sensor anyways. I usually turn that feature off anyways.

  39. ErichK on December 21, 2021 at 12:27 pm

I use a piece of tape

  40. MarliQQ on December 21, 2021 at 12:28 pm

I cover my laptop cam for the instance I accidentally forget it’s on not because of hacking. It would be dumb to be concerned about hacking when my cellphone camera which is always with me is uncovered always. Also I am of the mind that I have far too many electronics in my house that can invade my privacy to be worrying about cameras. If someone wants to hack me they can hack me.

  50. Diego Lasner Pazmiño on December 21, 2021 at 12:41 pm

people think they are more important than they really are. Nobody wants to spy on you LMAOOO. No need to cover your camera. If anyone is going to hack your camera, its going to be an independent hacker and for a very targeted reason, just like they said in the video. Apple is not going to spy on you, they don’t need that kind of controversy when a huge portion of their clientele buy Apple products specifically for the privacy. If anything, they are probably saying don’t cover your camera so Apple can sell you their own fancy camera cover for 100x the price
