Best Computer for Music Production in 2022 – What's Needed and Why!

Best Computer for Music Production in 2022 – What's Needed and Why!

In this video, I will explain what’s the best computer for music production. I will show you what’s needed, and why, so this will be the ultimate music production computer buyer’s guide. I will also show you what’s best for music production when it comes to laptops and stationary computers. Additionally, also show you the best budget computer for music production as well. Music production is one of the most CPU-intensive tasks people do on computers today. Why is music production so demanding on your CPU? This is because music production relies on real-time processing, which is very difficult for a CPU to do. If you make huge projects in FL Studio, Ableton, or any other DAW, you’ll need pretty powerful hardware in order to run it. The CPU is extremely important for a music production computer, and I will also show you what’s is best for music production between Intel and AMD right now.
In the second half of this video, we will also be building a brand new computer for music production from scratch. I will show you all the parts used and how to put them all together. If you’re looking for a new computer for music production, then check out the parts list below. It doesn’t matter if you use FL Studio, Ableton, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, or whatever. They all work in a similar manner, so a computer that works well for say FL Studio will also work well for Ableton, Logic, Cubase, and every other DAW as well. The music production computer shown in this video is in my opinion the best computer for music production in 2022.

Does the ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F motherboard really support Thunderbolt? I can’t find the port in any of the product images. Sorry if the question is maybe silly, I’ve never built a pc before.

This video was helpful in understanding why my computer has crackling and distortion when I record through my Apollo X4 into my XPS 15. It simply doesn’t have the raw core performance to handle the signal. Is that right? It’s a 10th Gen H processor at 2.60ghz.

Greetings FireWalk 😁 I still have a question FireWalk To be sure , on the link to amazon (i am in Europe ) i get only the Fractal Design Define 7 Compact (size WIDE 21 cm 8,26 inch , DEEP 42.7 cm -16.81 inch , HEIGHT 47.4 cm – 18.66 inch) ,,,That is the small compact version , but there is also a bigger version > Fractal Design Define 7 Midi Tower (size WIDE 24 cm 9.44 inch , DEEP 54.7 cm -21.53 inch , HEIGHT 47.5 cm – 18.70 inch) the last one is bigger so mostly wider and deeper , which one should i take for to fit in the Noctua NH-D15S cooler for the CPU ,,, If i know which one to take then i can order the wholle set up that you gave in the video and links , Thx in advance 🖥🖱💽

16 GB of RAM are not enough. Modern sound libraries are very heavy and you don’t want to be short on RAM in multitrack. Stradivari quarter will easily take all of your 16GB without even adding compressors, delays and other stuff.

  9. Hero Desu on September 20, 2022 at 4:23 am

Do you think it will be better to wait for Intel’s 13th gen cpus to come out this fall or is the 12900k good enough? Thanks.

  10. Roel Cyborg on September 20, 2022 at 4:23 am

I have decided to go with the bigger Fractal case Thx good advance better airflow , cooler so i quieter less noise, I still have a question about the m.2 NVMe > WD_BLUE SN570 SSD’s each 2 TB , i want to put 3 of them in in staid of any SSD disk’s at all > Is that okay , one for system (Windows ,Cubase , Native Instruments , and other for the Samples from Native Instruments , and the third one to record the songs and store the data , Will this work as good (faster) then having a couple of SSD disks ? I am thinking if buy this for storage also ! 1/ as System SSD m.2 , 2 /as sample SSD m.2 , 3/ as storage and record song data SSD m.2

  15. gme on September 20, 2022 at 4:28 am

Found this 2 weeks after building a new audio production PC (i9-12900KS), glad to know I was on the right track. Intel still has the lead for this use case, as much as I want to support AMD and promote healthy competition.

Slow clap for you!! I just came by to say: You’re the real MVP! This was super helpful and PLAIN! In layman’s terms i learned more from this video about building my own PC than I had ever learned ! Thanks!

  19. steven tama on September 20, 2022 at 4:31 am

thank you for your explanation! surely helped a lot and brought new information for me especially why DAW favors single threaded performance over multi core. i wanted to ask about the motherboard. when choosing the motherboard, do you consider the audio codec in it? does it effects the quality of the music, or the experience of producing it? thanks in advance.

What would you recommend for SSD/HD. Should you put the OS and DAW on one SSD and data/projects on another. Since I am starting fresh I want to do it right! Any thoughts? Thank you!

Dude has the how it’s made voice

  28. Saricubra on September 20, 2022 at 4:44 am

Ryzen 9 5950X is the best CPU for mixing and 12900K for instrumental work. DAW bench youtuber compared Zen 3 and Alder Lake chips, DDR5 and Windows 11 also do a significant boost to DAW perfomance. The e cores bottleneck the 12900K’s DSP perfomance, the 5950X is a 16 powerful core chip.

Should I get the 12700 or the 12700K?

Hi, I got the performance option and it is not even starting with the BIOS, anyone with the same problem?

  33. Kenneth Jackson on September 20, 2022 at 4:48 am

Just saw your video snot PC and its performance. I need a new computer and I’m using an iMac 27 inch with 32gb ram and it’s not new 2015, I think. But I use Logic and PC doesn’t use Logic. I would like laptop, but the MacPro M1 with 64 ram, 2tb comes to almost 5k. What you showed was a stationary and not a laptop PC. What can I do? I’m still with my iMac. Any advice. Thank you so much.

  34. Enny on September 20, 2022 at 4:52 am

    Hello Firewalk
If I am going for the Intel i9 12900KS CPU, do I still need the ASUS ROG STRIX Z-690F Gaming WiFi or do you have something else you’d recommend??

  35. Steven Asselman on September 20, 2022 at 4:53 am

It’s little later in the year and the 12900K is a little dearer than the 5950X, but I’ll still go for the 12900K for my build. I think the main difference however is the hybrid architecture and DDR5. Also the U-12A is a bit dearer than the D15S, but it’s smaller and cools better somehow.
Also, a videocard is cute, but take an example what the graphics in the 12900K can do with, as a desktop example: video-editing!

  36. Renimize on September 20, 2022 at 4:53 am

okay but why use Userbenchmark for getting baseline performance?

userbenchmark have been widely proven to be extremely biased to intel and nvidia products, gamers nexus and other hardware reviewers have repeatedly stated this

  37. joey fatass on September 20, 2022 at 4:54 am

I need to upgrade my cpu but who gives a shit, it only crashed once

  38. Saricubra on September 20, 2022 at 4:54 am

I think AMD is more well rounded on the very high end, i think the Ryzen 9 5950X is very popular on high end studios.

Core i9-12900K is a good alternative for now, but note the e cores are a bottleneck because their single core perfomance is very slow vs the p cores.

  39. Ezequiel Amster on September 20, 2022 at 4:54 am

would you recomend the i7 1165g7 or an i7 11800h in single core is better the 1165 but the otherone is better in everything else

  40. Saleem Ahmed on September 20, 2022 at 4:57 am

is single core processer better then multi core (for music production on any DAW ) ?

  41. Masonati2020 on September 20, 2022 at 4:57 am

GPU processing is here for plugins. 2023 will be there year but we start in 2022, UAD and Waves will need to catchup and port to GPU processing with stronger, better algorithms to keep up.

  42. TheEternalCold on September 20, 2022 at 4:58 am

  43. joey fatass on September 20, 2022 at 5:01 am

    Hi Mr Firewalk,
Firstly thank you for a a great & informative video. I`m in the process of purchasing components building a music pc at present My question is would it be benificial in investing in a Intel Core i9-12900KF over the Core i9-12900K,Core i9-12900 KS.

    Best wishes

Hi Fierewalk , I finished up my PC build (Your PC build same one ,Thx) Is it okay to partition the first operating system drive (windows and DAW into two or 3 partitions , C for Windows and Daw , D for Pix Vids doc( personal data ) and then is it a good idea to make on there a partition for recovery (like Windows (ISO ) file set up ,, i have a 2 TB SSD , DO you have any ideas ? How do you deal with that stuff ?

  49. Steve Walker on September 20, 2022 at 5:10 am

Can go with a fanless gpu. No HHD old tech. NMVE drives are exceptionally fast especially if fitted on mobo. I would go with 64 gb RAM for orchestral uses. Bios can reduce fan noise
