M1 Air Works great with Archicad25 and Sketchup. Since both use single core most of the time and M1 is on the top of the single core performance in consumer market CPUs right now, it’s a pleasure to use. And yes, in rendering it lacks the speed that you can get with superior GPU and 12 cores, but portability and price is affected. It’s also 100% silent. Comsol works too, tho 8gb Ram is not enough for most projects, aim for 16gb version, or wait for new release of 32GB SoCs. In Archicad 8gb with 2-3 projects running together works surprisingly well, in the same time, same projects occupy 25GB of ram on 2020 i5_10600 iMac standing nearby with pretty much same performance. 6700HQ Asus N552(yes its outdated) struggles with same Sketchup models, tho settings of the file itself affect performance more then hardware itself, since its single core, as I mentioned. Also I shall remind you that MBPs can be upgraded with external video card via thunderbolt port, if GPU performance – is what you lack in laptop.

    perspective comes with comparison.
sure you can use use your mobile workstation, for a long time, but do you want to? you sound like that guy, using 20yo. celeron processor, talking about value.
got myself mobile workstation 6 or 7 years ago, max specs at the point I7 – 4c/8t 3.2ghz, Quadro K3100, 16gb ram, 512 ssd. sounds like it should be on par with modern devices. yet it isn´t.
got myself maxed out 13" surface tablet pro 7, with same specs, but 1/3 of weight and with 7+ h battery life. and guess what it warks almost on par with my workstation.
also i got a moderate desktop which blows my mobile workstation away.

so what i´ve learned – equipment don´t last untill it breaks, it last until it´s relevant. gaming pc stays relevant about for 3 years, mobile workstation maybe 4-5. you can use it for longer, but it doesn´t mean you have efficient piece of equipment.

quadro was the biggest waste of money – your experience may vary deending on the kind of work you do – i need gpu mainly for visualisation, and quadro just doesn´t cut it. yes, they are definitely more stable for big projects with more single parts, but they are still slower and usually limited in vram which will become a bottleneck with better render techniques.

as coll mobile workstation sounds, it´s still a laptop.

If you’re a student gaming laptops is enought as student the weight is very important, since as a professional you spend that money to build your PC. One last recomendation try to get a monitor having two monitor screens will help a lot in your projects.

  18. xxmrrickxx on December 16, 2021 at 12:24 pm

I do engineering consultation and I really wanted a gaming laptop to work but have come to the same conclusion–a workstation with a quadro card is needed. For those complaining about the cost, think of it as moving out of the consumer/entry level world. It’s similar to pro level craftsman tools needed when you move from a homeowner to using them in your profession. The overall build quality, upgradability and manufacturer support that comes with a professional workstation is also a key factor.

Got the new 2021 ASUS – ROG Zephyrus G14- AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS – 32 GB RAM – 1 TB SSD with a graphics card of RTX 3060 6GB, gotta say it’s hard to beat those specs with such a low price when comparing them to workstations which are very pricy and have the same around of specs if not way lower specs , we’ll see how it works for me 😬 amazing content btw!!

Hello sir! I am an architect searching for a good laptop for our professional work including 3d renderings using lumion. As you suggested to go for workstations, pretty clear with that sir ❤️. Just one thing, quadro gpu’s are too slow to run lumion and BIM as my friend has quadro gpu, and now i am stuck again. Please help sir!! 😥

  33. Richard on December 16, 2021 at 12:42 pm

Thank you. This was very helpful. I have bought 2nd-hand or refurbished the past 10-15 years and saved tons of money! I have often looked at gaming laptops for the best features for my 3D modeling/rendering needs and found it a little disconcerting as I am not a gamer and prices tend to be exorbitant.
