I got my Asrock X300 Desktop mini PC with 6 cores and 12 threaded APU (may go up to 8 cores and 16 threads in the future), 3 terabytes or storage (Two SSD’s and one NVME; could add another NVME if I wanted to.), 32 gigs of 3200 megahertz RAM (Could go up to 64 gigs of RAM if I wanted to.). I am very happy with it. I also got a ASUS PB50 for work last year and am happy with that. Unlike Apple (what you see is what you get), the above mentioned mini PC’s (particularly the X300 mini PC) are very modular and allow you to beef it up as much as you would like.

    CAN’T BEAT A MAC MINI!

BMAX’s line of MaxMini computers seems like a better value than the HeroBox. The HeroBox is impressively cheap, but it cuts a few too many corners. Thermal throttling, and most annoying, they just don’t print out all the traces from the Ethernet controller to the RJ-45 port. The Ethernet is artificially limited to 100 Mbit. The BMAX line has the same Gemini Lake low-powered processors and SATA drive bay, but more RAM, actually functional Ethernet, and a slightly smaller footprint.

MINISFORUM also has an array of intriguing low-powered portable computers. There are lots of OEMs selling variations built around Intel Cherry Trail and AMD’s embedded processors.

I’m using AsRock X300 with Ryzen 7 5700G, 1 TB SSD NvMe, 32 GB DDR3200 DDR4 RAM. I use it mainly for office work, live-streaming, video editing and some light gaming. It also serves as a backup for my main desktop. In my opinion, it is good enough for the average users and can handle much of the normal work that they do. The only downside is the processing speed during video editing, which is slower compared to my desktop, but this is expected for a unit that does not have a dedicated graphic card.
