I put new batteries in and jiggled the wires and it stopped short cycling for 2 days. Started doing it again, jiggled again and the short cycling stopped for a day. So basically I’m on my 4th jiggle. It stops short cycling for a day or two. Why is it doing this? A short in one of the wires? Now the jiggling isn’t working. What should I do?

Hi! Could pinched condensor radiator line(pipe that goes through fins) couse short cycle?

  6. Frans Sundjaja on December 15, 2021 at 12:47 pm

Hi. I notice I can work around the short cycling by turning the braker to off position and let it sit for about 5 mins and then to on position . 8 out of 10 this works. What gives?

  7. OthmanEmpire on December 15, 2021 at 12:53 pm

    Thanks for the video =)

You’re going to get some DIYer hurt. As well as save money for the people that did their own repair, but short us licensed contractors on potential service calls. Then there are the stooges that tried to follow your instructions and couldn’t do it, they call a professional out and are convinced that everything you said is fact, and the contractor is trying to sell them repairs that aren’t needed because it wasn’t something you’ve discussed on the channel.

Blower motor wires BLACK for AC high speed , blue for med speed , RED for low speed . Heat if you connect to BLACK for high speed , BLUE is med Hi preferred feel heat better than black .

Great context. I have done everything except the board. Thanks so much

  12. Farrukh khawaja on December 15, 2021 at 12:57 pm

Excellent content. Thanks. where can I find ‘how to bypass the thermostat?’

  13. Rahul Rathi on December 15, 2021 at 12:58 pm

While my AC is on, all of a sudden the zone board loses power for like 10 seconds, then gets power back. This leads to short cycling. Any idea whats happening?

What if my inside unit does not have a metering device? Mine just has a large fitting that 6 seperate tubes come out of from a bigger pipe,3 small tubes going to each side of the A unit…

  19. Wood Tiger on December 15, 2021 at 1:12 pm

If the condenser fan fails is it always seized? I had the condenser shut off due to a pressure trip after the fan stopped but am not sure which came first. The fan still can turn easily.

  20. Matt Murphy on December 15, 2021 at 1:12 pm

So do these same basic mechanics for residential AC condensor behavior also apply to other types of condenser? Auto? Forklift?

  21. DH K on December 15, 2021 at 1:16 pm

    Thank very good explanation

  22. Lets go brandon on December 15, 2021 at 1:16 pm

This sounds harder to fix then my relationship

  23. Wardog on December 15, 2021 at 1:18 pm

My condenser unit will not turn on. I tapped it with a hammer then it turned on. Possibly the switch or relay? It would turn on for a few minutes then go off again the I tap it with a hammer and it went back on. Checked for loose wires didn’t see any. That’s why I think it might be a faulty relay or switch. Any ideas?thank you.

  24. Phong Huynh on December 15, 2021 at 1:18 pm

    Hi Jake ,
How about overcharged. , should it be another problem too ? Thanks !

  25. Vadim Be on December 15, 2021 at 1:18 pm

another excellent video, thank you! I was surprised not to see the failing low power switch as one of the reasons – is it not likely to be a l culprit?

  26. Est. 1982 on December 15, 2021 at 1:19 pm

I have a trane 19xl installed I’m 2009. The ac turns on in stage 2 and then cuts out after 30 secs and then starts again it’ll do this for hours. I notice that the unit outside stays on. I had the freon and pressure checked and it was good. I have a nest thermostat…..could that be bad?

  27. Aladdin Elsayed on December 15, 2021 at 1:20 pm

Amazing content!!! Highly informative!!!! Thank you.

  28. J. Pearce on December 15, 2021 at 1:20 pm

does it count as short cycling if the unit takes a while to get down to temp (from 77 to 73 degrees), but then only runs for about 8-10 minutes each time to maintain the temp? most sites will tell you if it cycles in 10 mins or less then you’re short cycling.

  29. John Habibpour on December 15, 2021 at 1:24 pm

Hi there, thank you for your awesome video, yes mein have short sycle and unfortunately after 10 minutes fan offs and the compressor is still on and if I didnt off make bad noise,
Do you think I have to change the fan because I changed the capacitor and just I need to check contactor,

  30. Eric on December 15, 2021 at 1:24 pm

just by sifting through the comments, i was able to resolve my a/c’s short cycling issue, by rigging my thermostat batteries with some tin foil, since it was showing a "replace batteries" message, and i have no AA’s.

the unit is running better than it has in weeks.

bravo to this channel and its commenters.

  31. Kate Rendon on December 15, 2021 at 1:25 pm

Omg solved it in the first 2 minutes. Jiggled the wires in the thermostat and it fixed. You just saved me the $75 payment on my home warranty plus a half day of missed work. Bless you

  32. Racing the Moon on December 15, 2021 at 1:25 pm

Thank You! Very good information. I’ve been suspect of the thermostat and or low voltage from the power company. Usually starts short cycling at 6:45 A.M. and again at 5:30.P.M. I’m thinking I’m at the end of the power grid 6:45 electric hot water is coming on because it’s shower time before work then 5:30 home from work shower and electric stove time. 🥶

Should I replace a new Ac if it short cycles right away?

  35. Roberto Wembley on December 15, 2021 at 1:26 pm

It was the batteries in thermostat. Thanks !

  36. itwasnthenails on December 15, 2021 at 1:28 pm

If I had this problem with low refrigerant would the unit put out cold air when i shut it down for a bit the short cycle stops for awhile any ideas ..thanks

  37. Roger R Lyon Jr on December 15, 2021 at 1:29 pm

I’m just starting out in the HVAC residential industry , these videos are priceless,.. although not as good as the jokes👍🏼💯🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  38. marie on December 15, 2021 at 1:30 pm

How long should I set my AC per cycle? I thought our AC is short cycling because it only runs for 5mins every cycle. I even called HVAC to check it. They said they couldn’t find the problem. When I checked the settings it was actually set to 5mins. Could it be the reason why it feels humid inside our house because the cycle is too short? Humidity level ranges 58-75, is it considered high?

  39. Breezyturbo on December 15, 2021 at 1:31 pm

I’m not to sure if you will see this but, my ac would run for like 1 hour and then turn off and everything seems fine and my house is 94 degrees it’s unbearable. This has been a problem for years and AC guys come can the it breaks again. It’s like it overheats then shut down

  40. Sidney Rambert on December 15, 2021 at 1:32 pm

What is going on when you’re unit is turning on but thermostat is off . No air is coming out vent. Is that normal

  41. Sherwin Marshall on December 15, 2021 at 1:33 pm

Your videos are on point, what makes an evaporator inside the house turn on and off like between 1 to 3 seconds

Informative video. My furnace short cycles but it does it on it’s own without hitting the set temperature and sometimes it will just keep running. I’m going to check for loose wires.

    Hey great videos!

After watching 3 of your them I still couldn’t fix my carrier ac unit sitting outside.
What I diagnosed so far is:
    – Condenser works but fan doesn’t. After 40-50 seconds condenser shuts down.
    – I opened up the panel. Capacitor and cables all look good and new. There is a blinking yellow light on the motherboard tho. (it’s a 2008 made unit). Couldn’t find what it means online.

Any thoughts what the problem is here?

Mine is a carrier performance 24apa5 model ac.

  49. Stephan Sanchez on December 15, 2021 at 1:40 pm

Contactor gets pushed in then fan motor turns off why is that I just changed out the contactor all wires are correct

  50. A U on December 15, 2021 at 1:40 pm

Thanks for the video! My case a bit different: the condenser works fine when it’s on AC, but short cycling on heater only. Could you help to figure what might be the issue? Thank you very much
