Diabetics Are Hacking Their Own Insulin Pumps

Diabetics Are Hacking Their Own Insulin Pumps

There is a revolution in the Type 1 diabetes community and thousands of people are now hacking their insulin pumps for better blood sugar management. CNBC’s Erin Black, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 20 years ago, decided to try out the hacked system. Here’s what happened.

Type 1 diabetes is a disease that affects more than 1.2 million Americans. I’m one of them.

It’s a disease that impairs the body’s ability to produce the hormone insulin, which normally comes from the pancreas. So insulin has to be injected.

Managing blood sugars can be very difficult, and patients use a pump to help mimic the activity of the pancreas. However, pumps don’t automatically adjust insulin levels for diabetics. And the manual process is tedious and can be dangerous.

But a few years ago, people figured out how to hack their insulin pumps to make them automatically adjust insulin levels more precisely.

This made me wonder: If people can hack the pump to make their own life better, this means that the app is weak enough for everyone with minimal knowledge to hack it. Imagine if someone with bad intentions hack it and start to release more insulin than needed

crazy misleading, showing a before graph over a 24hour period and then comparing it to a 6hour graph period. Sad

DIY all the way… I guarantee everybody starts doing the DYI version of this unit they’re trying to sell for 7 Grand. be forced to lower the price or just somehow banned you from using your own personal because it’s about the money to them

The fact that this can be done by a simple neural network and no company has done this is stupid

  13. Cristaliana Ivor on August 12, 2021 at 9:49 pm

    "it’s like hacking your car"
    No its actually not:
Cars need to be regulated to a bigger degree, because if something goes wrong, you put other people at risk too – not just yourself.

If you hack your insulin pump, you put mainly yourself at risk. (as long as you don’t drive a car that is, or operate other heavy machinery)

What is this world we are in right now it’s madness

  15. Ynnel?! on August 12, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Seems like the old pump hack could save money while still functioning to allow diabetics to regain their lives and eat what they want again within reason, kind of like fixing/modifying your own car. If you know what you’re doing or have access to somebody who does that can offer guidance, it’s perfectly safe and can allow you to bring a car’s performance, tech integration or ride quality into the modern era while not spending $80,000 on a new car, or it can let you create a completely custom and unique vehicle.

Being able to easily modify and personalize your own stuff was the past, and it should be the future, too, not big tech anti-consumer ‘just throw it away and buy a new one instead of fixing the minor problem and saving your money’ crap like Apple or John Deere pulls.

  19. b loa on August 12, 2021 at 9:55 pm

Lmfao of course the US healthcare system would do that 😐

  20. Depressed Doggo on August 12, 2021 at 9:57 pm

I see this as more dystopian than a feel good story. The fact that the patients *had* to do this *themselves* tells you how incompetent the American healthcare system and government are.

Like adding braking system because your car was made by a coked up crackhead.

  22. ComedyBastahd on August 12, 2021 at 9:58 pm

This went from being an interesting story about a helpful insulin pump modification to being a damn infomercial for some company trying to profit off of someone’s illnes. smh

…and even the new software, is still PAINFULLY bad and has not changed over the past 8 years. Mini med ‘s CGM is so bad the system makes you RE-CALIBRATE every 12 hours at the very least. And it is usually off 20-50 BY THEIR OWN ANALYSIS.

  27. Nob ivy on August 12, 2021 at 10:01 pm

I see how there are alot of comments talking about how this technology being adapted in the healthcare system, but I think that the people who designed these pumps _already_ had the option to create something like this. Only thing is, they didn’t wanna take liability for any accidents / malfunctioning lawsuits for devices like these which handed the wheel over to a machine.

  28. Allen Han on August 12, 2021 at 10:04 pm

a $7000.00 system when people are already hacked for $150.00 with a $30 dollar device that does the same thing??

Talk about capitalism and monopoly or people’s lives.

  29. Isa C. on August 12, 2021 at 10:06 pm

FDA is the biggest American scam that I ever seen.

  30. Some Person on August 12, 2021 at 10:07 pm

if I ever get diabetes id rather die than work my ass off just trying to stay alive. Insulin is expensive costing $175-$300 per vile, most people need 2-3 viles per month of insulin. Some people require even more than 2-3 viles per month.

  31. fairy goddamn mother on August 12, 2021 at 10:08 pm

The pumb should have been designed that way .it wasn’t a mistake that It was designed the other way.
The system is not broken. It’s designed that way.

  32. Qolumbia on August 12, 2021 at 10:13 pm

diy at home pancreas sounds like a good idea 👍 srs tho how confident do you have to be to do this, one bug and you’re donezo correct? also cant you get assassinated via hacking?

  33. lmiao on August 12, 2021 at 10:16 pm

so, this device work with a bluetooth connection? if someone intercept that signal? he can do whatever he want with ur insuline levels

  34. Science on August 12, 2021 at 10:18 pm

The amoral health system money machine of America is asinine. I’m not surprised lots of Americans remain anti-vaxxers. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

  37. Nim Sandhu on August 12, 2021 at 10:24 pm

Wealthiest country in the world… citizens having to use grassroots tech to improve their quality of life. It’s disgusting. I live in UK; NHS is becoming world health service since we can’t exactly throw someone out of the country who arrived here dying of something. But in US it’s fine because healthcare isn’t free there… It’s stuff like this that people 1000 years down the line will look poorly on.

  38. WallyFM on August 12, 2021 at 10:25 pm

It’s things like this that make me believe the big pharma conspiracy theory. It would not surprise me at all if the government and pharmaceutical companies quietly assassinate people who discover cures for highly profitable diseases, such as cancer.

  39. Just Another Mortal on August 12, 2021 at 10:25 pm

I’m thankful to be living in a country that provides free healthcare 🙏
