Games Journalism
Kotaku is Kotaku. But the landscape of game journalism is… weird. Sorry if i don’t give any hard answers in this video. I find that it’s really hard to speak in definites when talking about real world stuff. If I could flex my GameInformer collection magazine I would though.

I think game journalism died in the eyes of the public was the cup head tutorial controversy
Could I interest you in Elder Scrolls all of the time will now be what I say to mock my elder-scrolls obsessed friend
1:14 okay I’ve seen this game a few times and it looks immaculate but I can’t figure out what it’s called plz help.
I grew up wanting to become a (research) journalist, but the profession is dead. The appeal it had for me is completely gone in the current era. There aren’t a lot of actual journalists left, only creative ad-salespeople.
I decided to do something else with my life.
Whenever I think of game journalists I think this game makes you feel like Batman
Rowby, my friend, you GOTTA stop making me ugly laugh at 2a it’s becoming a problem! My wife thinks I’m fucked enough but when I’m laughing like a maniac from your ads or a 1 sec clip of a song she’s never heard of… plus now she knows she’s not funny, not just that I don’t laugh…
5:14 what game is this? Looks hella cool

Rowby’s YouTube recommended closely resembles mine I have 5 of the same videos, maybe he’s actually a real person behind the YouTube screen even???
One my old teachers told me that I should do videos on video games. Videos like the ones you or Yahtzee make, ultimately summarizing a game in an entertaining and informative way, combining my own sense of humor with genuine thoughts and opinions as well as content from the game themselves. Do you have any suggestions for software and equipment I could use to get my feet on the grounds? I certainly a low-height chair because it’s always quietly humiliating that my 5’6" frame can’t reach the floor in an average chair unless I sink so low into the seat that I look like Quasimodo with scoliosis.
I love how Rowby can be a critic and down to earth at the same time, even though those two are rather far apart.
3:34 never fails to make me giggle-
I don’t know why, but for some reason there are some really good Nintendo Switch game reviewers here on YouTube. So usually when I’m looking for a review of a PC game I’m considering, I look for those if available. Their plain and simple and get right to the points of the positives and negatives of the game.
I usually only check those "new journalism" style reviews from people I like after I competed the game since I don’t see them as reviews, and more along the lines of a conversation you’d have with a friend after you both played a game or watched a movie. Watching them before hand can really kill a reason to play these games because they can be quite spoiler heavy.
………i got distracted by the neotwewy clips. Good taste
Wake up, The Boy has uploaded.
I really hope Nintendo blacklist their ass. It’s about time this POS site have some consequence.
Hell they even faked the game awards in 2013 last second, because 1st place originally was an erotic game, even if it was a joke from 4chan, IT COULD’VE LEGITIMATELY WON AT LEAST 2ND PLACE
Hey, sorry for asking out of turn, but do you plan on doing a video on Omori? Given how much it pops p, and how good it is, I’d like to see your style of review applied to it, if you ever plan on it
Thanks for the sacrifice, Jesus.
But seriously, I liked your point on objectivity.
Too much water is a legitimate, if vaguely worded, criticism of generation 3 of pokemon.
I hope I get 50k by the next vid. That would be akward
Some people actually do like Kotaku. Just saying.
I forget gaming journalists exist until I see one of Kotaku or Polygon’s dumb headlines lmao
"The fall of games journalism" is a weird way to spell Polygon.
3:35 the perfect song to sum that up lol also congratulations on 50k in advance
This was really fantastic! I hope you make more vids like this
Thanks for the vid man. Enjoy your nap.
Gaming "journalism" died for me when they started bringing nonsense politics and writing bs pieces that really had nothing to do with the game they were talking about.
15:14 I think it’s more the idea that if you review a game, you should explore all of its mechanics even if you don’t find them particularly engaging. So hearing that she just glosses over something on a whim makes her review seem shoddy.
Dean Takahashi Exists still…
Rowby could make a video of him eating and i would still watch all of it
With rowby catboy fanart on my other monitor
That rpg game looks fun, what is it?,actually what are most lol
Honestly I feel that since the deadlines exist at all kill most credibility that they can have. Whenever they have to get something out quick, people are automatically going to be skeptical as to whether or not the reviewer is genuine, or wants a big paycheck. If deadlines were way looser and there was no urgency to rush it then they would be easier to support. As are you really going to trust what someone says about a game when what they say comes out only a day or two a playable build comes out?
journalists who try (note: try) to do "creative writing" or go on some prose tangent are so, so bad. please take a writing class first
15:41 No, i don’t think that is the reason and it’s also a bad analogy.
Imagine you are a carpenter and you have a long history of crafting chairs. All your life you crafted all kinds of chairs for hobby, small cute chairs, big wide dad chairs, you are very into that and there is a huge community of chair builders you’re a part of and all of them are passionate about what they do.
Now, imagine some dude who claims to be a carpenter journalist but don’t even know in which hand they hold their hammer and chisel to present a upcoming brand new balancing chair. They have a huge following base of people who listens and agrees to what he says because they think he’s credible and a great authority in chair building but instead the review he gives of the balancing chair is about how he couldn’t use it because he was sitting upsidedown trying to wave it with their hands on the ground and the feet in the neck rest, therefore new chair bad 1/10 – oh and by the way please add a hole so I can shit without leaving my comfort.
The hobbists would feel completely stunned by the stupidity of the "journalist", get angry but ultimately have a great time laughing and also rocking the balancing chair.
This is what gamers feel when people that should be credible in their reporting field write bad reviews.
what was the track used at the end white text slides? it sounds so familiar but i have a terrible musical memory that it cant possibly what i think it is. but also really enjoyed this vid rowby!!!
i bought life is strange true colours for the full price cuz of reviews and then was immediately disappointed
Thank you for recommending the "do not recommend Channel" button. The only way this practice will go away is if we as the consumer tells the company who practice it that we won’t listen and that the practice is leading to a loss in revenue.
Anyone know what the game at 3:06 is?
Let us remember that tlou2 was trash
Reviews of games can have very practical elements but if someone thinks the fall of video game journalism is that there’s too many "sjws" reviewing games then we’ve completely lost the plot.
If we’re talking about headlines and the actual news reporting side of things then I’d agree much more. There’s been a weird trend of treating reviews as something that must be handled a certain way as if thats as applicable to a wider audience as we want to pretend it is.
I hard disagree with your "new journalism" take – like I said above, games do not occupy the same world that a damn couch review covers. If we want to preview a game a let’s play does way better at this than a dry written review about features. I havent wanted or needed this in a decade. This kind of review has much better effect with a game play video.
If i want to hear an opinion about a game, that’s when I look up reviews. Its so weird that in 2021 we’re acting surprised that there’s less "dry reviews"
Do I think the feature list breakdown is needed? Yes. Does every games journo site need to do this? Fuck no, after one of those kinds of breakdowns I just want to know what someone thinks of a game. Is that journalism? No, no in any other sense. The issue with the games industry is that all we care about are info about games and opinions about games. This has been the whole thing since the inception of the modern games industry. It’s not "new journalism"
I believe gaming journalism should be objective and stick to the video game. Politics shouldn’t be mentioned unless it is a key aspect of the game, and if that’s the case, the authors politic views should not interfere with the review, nor should they use them to sway people towards or away from the game. If I read a review, I wanna see how the game feels and whether it’s worth buying.
hey it’s good you are addressing this. there are as with content on internet some better, some worse (also nice bo burnham references lol). and there has been considerable decline in video game critiques genuinity.
still ill rewatch this multiple times to really gain the full understanding. ya know my brain is flat.
Can someone make a full version of the eledersscrols song (like "it just works")
I hate clickbate]
