GE Refrigerator Won't Cool – Easy Ideas on how to Fix a Refrigerator Not Cooling

Do you have a GE Refrigerator that won’t cool at all, or just isn’t getting cool enough? Many times, people think they need to figure out how to add freon to a refrigerator, but many times, its a fix that a regular person can do, or at least troubleshoot themselves easily enough.

In this video, I want to show you some GE Refrigerator troubleshooting – what GE Refrigerator parts to look for that could cause the unit to not work as its intended. On this one, we find out pretty darn fast why it won’t work! But I went ahead and went over other major parts we find that are responsible for causing a refrigerator like this to not work properly.

The goal of this video is to show you why a GE refrigerator won’t cool, and the main, easy-to-fix culprits of why a GE fridge won’t cool.

A few things we cover in the video:

– How to clean a refrigerator
– How to check a refrigerator compressor relay
– How to Repair a GE refrigerator defroster system
– Addressing a GE Refrigerator Not Cooling

You’re the man! I wasn’t sure what to do and your video was so well done. You explained things thoroughly & your camera angles were excellent. I particularly liked the highlighted parts. You could have stopped there but you went above and beyond showing how to order the parts and where to find videos that explain the replacement of the finer parts. I hope everyone knows if they NEED TO ORDER A PART, TO USE YOUR LINK so you can receive a bit of compensation. TY – New subscriber :-))

I put a new compressor fan in but it still won’t spin : the condensor isn’t running either: is it the compressor relay ? Why isn’t my new fan working?

Wow! This video blew up. When I filmed this video, I actually filmed a few other things that weren’t related to the issue of it not cooling. If your GE refrigerator leaks water (or any refrigerator, really), this video may help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1-HQyvQ57k

What if the freezer works but the fridge does not, any suggestions? Thanks.

  24. Sammy Seguin on November 4, 2021 at 10:41 am

Well, my freezer was no working, temperature was up to the point ice cubes were melting. Went through all the steps as per the video, replaced the condenser fan at the top of the condenser coils.
It was a partial fix. The temperature in the freezer should be (default 0) and the fridge (default 34).
The freezer temperature now fluctuates between 2 and 7 degrees.
    Main board problem?

Have similar fridge, identical layout, running for 15 years. Was almost no dust at all, just a bit.
It suddenly stopped working, and I removed the lower back cover, the compressor fan didn’t run properly.
Couldn’t figure out whats wrong, just oiled the fan-motor, and plugged it in the wall.
Surprisingly worked again just fine, but not the fan-motor, only when I helped it with my finger.
Can’t be the motor itself, what can it be?
I let the cover stay off, because the cooling are more efficient w/o the cover, it still working good, w/o working fan-motor.

Hi Ben, I defrosted my Kenmore Elite 596.76602601 bottom freezer and now the freezer is at 27 degrees F and the fridge is at 45 degrees F – stuck here.

Brushed and vacuumed coils in back and in front.
Compressor is running (not super hot)
Fan in freezer and in back are running.
Could this be in demo mode? Any ideas on what it would be? Thank you.

How about the Microwave keeps saying door opens and wouldn’t running meanwhile the door is closed . What to do to fix it ? Thank you !

  45. Lisa Carter on November 4, 2021 at 11:09 am

Thanks for this video. I appreciate your detailed information. My refrigerator stopped cooling earlier this week and the freezer was still working fine. I found ice on the outside of the panel that covers the evaporator coils and pulled it off to find the coils are completely covered in ice. I found the thermostat lid was swollen. So I thought it was just that. However, after I put everything back together, I noticed the freezer is now not working as well as before I opened everything up. I don’t know if I caused this or not. Also, I found my multimeter is broken. Since I can’t check the continuity/resistance for the individual component parts, I just decided to order the defrost heater, thermostat, and sensor from your site. I figure it can’t hurt; the refrigerator was manufactured in either 2002 or 2003 so it feels like these parts will probably go bad more sooner than later, even if they’re okay now. The condenser and fans seem to be working fine. Just wanted to convey my appreciation for both this video and for the great replacement parts prices on your website!

I really used to dread getting a refrigerator call, but honestly love them now. Vents, fans, relay, timer….USUALLY. LOL

  49. Bill Benton on November 4, 2021 at 11:12 am

What I’d like to know is why (right out of the box…and now…14 years later (after defrosting) my Whirlpool fridge–initially–has taken so long to cool down (about two days). Over the last month, it has been working like a SUPER champ (extremely cold), but that initial time requirement has me baffled.

  50. Sam R on November 4, 2021 at 11:14 am

Hi Ben, I really need your help because I’m not giving up on fixing my refrigerator ( GE TFX22CRXF 21.7 cu,ft ). I follow your video and I purchase the “Flexible Cleaning Hose and Brush to clean the Links and Dirt under the fridge. I replace the “Double Heat Defrost Unit” ($15) that really was bad. I replace the Compressor “Relay and Overload” that came together for the same price ($15) and I replace the “Defrost Timer” ($10) from looking at other videos that subjected it could be the problem also. All this parts I carefully order them to make sure they are for my fridge but the condenser in the fr4ezzer is still freezing up. I have to defrosted it about every 6 to 7 weeks and it works fine until it frizzes again. PLEASE!!! Do you have any other subjection of what else it could be?????? I don’t think it needs Freon!, RIGHT?….. What ever you can think of I really appreciated. Thank you
