How to Choose a Computer for Architecture

How to Choose a Computer for Architecture

A guide to choosing the best computers for architecture. Whether you’re a student, pro, or in a related discipline, this video will walk you through my methodology and selection criteria. I discuss in detail:
– Laptops vs. Desktop Systems
– Mac vs. Windows
– Software (commonly used and requirements)
– Hardware: CPU, Graphics Cards, Monitors
Along with this, you’ll see why I chose the system I did and what it means to my architecture practice. A truly behind-the-scenes look at my architecture practice.

Hi! What do you think of Aorus 15 X9? It has i-7 8750 RTX 2070 with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD. I mainly use AutoCad, sketchup or Rhino for modeling and Lumion for rendering. Photoshop for post production.

I had CAD Drafting in “Archutorture” School in 1984. The entire class was working off one main frame computer. You had to back up what you did that day on a Floppy Disk that you carried in your backpack. Multiple floppy disks. When the computer went down, no one could work. If it went down during class, you would lose everything you were working on that day. Watching how many tools are available today. Seems like cheating. Two years to learn how to render. Perspectives. Now “click” look from any view. Add car, tree, person. Sun ,shade hours learning that. Have fun with all these tools at your disposal. Makes for better presentation. 35 years in the business. One thing I learned. You can be doing the best Architecture in the world. If you don’t have a client with money, its all for pleasure.

I bought a MSI 15" Prestige in January, but I’m still using it although sometimes I have problems with autocad, from one moment to another it shows me the typical message: FATAL ERROR, even so I’m still waiting for the best moment to be able to buy a 27 "iMac even when the shortcut command of the autocad are not the same, at least at the time I used autocad for mac in 2018..Best Wishes from Peru

I’ve never seen such an equilibrium between technical and user experience for architects! I’ve looked all over YouTube and found explanations way too Computer Engineering sided, that went in one year and out the other. And the majority of videos aimed at architects are way too simplistic. Dude, this video is the perfect balance between anything I needed here!!!!

For anyone watching in 2020 looking for a specific laptop to look for, the ASUS Zenbook 15 is an incredible laptop that fits the criteria extremely well. There a few variants, so double check the specs before you buy, but the price is practically a steal for what you’re getting

Thank you. I have a question on architectural school. I’m planning on taking architect class and was recommended to use PC over Mac because of professor will be using windows software. I’m better with apple OS over windows OS. Shpuld I go with an apple MacBook due to familiarity or go with windows PC to be able follow along with the professor?

  47. Dennis Ogan on June 22, 2021 at 1:12 am

I’ve been a draftsman for over 40 years. I have an HP Pavilion HPE v9 Seriece desktop and an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with a 15" monitor. I also have twin 24" Samsung monitors and a logitech MK710 keyboard. I purchased most of this in 2012 when I started my own business back in Portland. When I started my business I also purchased the Infrastructure Design Suite 2014 from Autodesk for around $9800.00. My PC and laptop run on Windows 7 Pro. In the past 8 years I have not had any problems with the software or hardware, but I need to upgrade everything. I would love to keep my current setup but none of the new Autodesk products will run on Windows 7. I find it painful the move to the subscription based software because of the crazy high cost and Autodesk will not give me anything as a trade-in for my current software. Should I sell it all and bite the bullet or try to work off two separate platforms? Any suggestions would be helpful. I plan to stay in business for another 4-5 years. Moving to Dallas, Texas was the smartest decision I have ever made. I love what I do and it keeps me out of trouble.

  48. Kayo Sousa on June 22, 2021 at 1:13 am

I have a question Mr. Reinholdt, how come you said that on a mac, bootcamp, and having to reboot all the time is a pain but you work on a mac?

  49. matthias van ark on June 22, 2021 at 1:18 am

I have a 1050TI and it works fine in ArchiCAD and photoshop, but it crashes while I am working in rendering programs. Wish i bought a 1060😅
