I have a Advance 175 watt 120V ballast. It has 2 coms, 1 120V and 1 Cap. Where do I put the 2 Coms? Label is very faded and all I can make out is the date it was manufactured

I have a 220 light pole do I need to connect the 220 line too?

  4. Lamtitude on October 17, 2022 at 5:35 am

Thank you so much man. You really saved a co worker and I. We wired the whole thing up to 277v, but we couldn’t figure out what cap meant on the wiring diagram. Then we saw the round cylinder said 240 on it, so we left it in the box, assuming it was only used for a 240v application. We flipped the switch and nothing happened, so we quickly turned it off to prevent any damage to the ballast.

We found your video and as soon as you said the round cylinder was the capacitor, it all made sense. Again, thank you for taking the time to post this.

Nice presentation! Would you be able to lead me to any information on how to test a Low Pressure Sodium ballast, perhaps taking resistance readings? I maintain 55Watt LPS tunnel fixtures and I’m trying to figure out when it’s the capacitor that’s bad, and when it’s the ballast that’s bad. Thanks!

You talk about a negative effect when you cross the live wire with the common wire at the lamp holder. What negative effect are you talking about? Fire hazard, or just having a better chance of getting shocked? What if you crossed these wires on an overhead florescent? What negative effect would that have? I’ve heard none to many. I agree it’s bad practice, but some say it makes no difference in some situation. Which is it?

    Well done! Thank you.
    What does the capacitor do?

If that ballast where to go bad could it increase the voltage on the line ?

I have a question why some us don’t have a ignitor?

  20. Samuel King on October 17, 2022 at 5:58 am

Does it matter which common wire is used for the igniter and which is used for the power input?

Hi guys, I want to run a 240v 1000w metal halide ballast and 1000w lamp. Is that system maxed out or would I be able work in digital timer as well? Many Thanks.

  29. Ray Blouin on October 17, 2022 at 6:05 am

You should explain what your wiring up each component

  30. Beretta96Dan on October 17, 2022 at 6:06 am

I wouldn’t sweat the ground wire. It would wirenut to the green ground wire in the fiixture.

  31. Deron Caplan on October 17, 2022 at 6:06 am

I followed your instructions to attach a MH ballast to my hood but I’m running into a weird problem. I connected a plug adapter to my ballast and plugged it into my hood but the bulb would not turn on. I started tinkering and found that when i disconnected the green ground wire that runs from the hood to the screw on the ballast, the light would go on. It’s nice that it works now but i’m not keen on leaving the ground disconnected. Any idea why this might have happened?

  33. Jesse Jenkins on October 17, 2022 at 6:07 am

    Could you use a 250w bulb on a 400w ballast? Or a 600w bulb on a 1000w ballast?

  34. Jayson Kubojiri on October 17, 2022 at 6:10 am

you wired the capacitor wrong. one lead of the capacitor goes to the "cap" wire on the ballast and the other lead goes to the return wire on the light socket.

  35. josue huizar on October 17, 2022 at 6:10 am

    great video

  36. j on October 17, 2022 at 6:12 am

hey so i have one of these ballasts got it wired up perfectly…..i plug it in warms up and functions good…..but then the breaker starts rattling obviously the breaker that the light is running on. Also when i unplug it and try to plug back in the light wont come on but the ballast starts you can hear it vibrating and everything.

So im trying to troubleshoot this to make sure my light doesnt turn off when im gone or something, im gonna try and find a circuit that is less busy to connect to today and see if that helps. At first i thought there was just a bad connection somewhere or the incorrect capacitor was being used i dont believe that is the case though.

If anyone could provide any input you would be a great help!!!

  37. George Rdz on October 17, 2022 at 6:12 am

Commonly the maker of ballast does the connections of ignitor and capacitor; commonly the ballast sales ready to install, connect to power and lamp.

The white cylinder that you call a capacitor is actually an ignitor and I believe you connected it wrong.
