How Video Game Characters Are Made (FULL PROCESS)

How Video Game Characters Are Made (FULL PROCESS)

Hey there everyone, hope your having a great day. When doing research on how video game characters are made for their games I couldn’t find a video that went over the full process, so I decided t make my own. In this video I quickly explain how the 3d models are made by going over concept art, the base mesh, high resolution sculpting, texturing, UV maps / normal maps and rigging. The most popular programs for these consist of zbrush, maya, 3d max, photoshop, topogun, mudbox, 3d coat, substance painter, cinema 4d and many many more. Hope you learned something, have a great week 🙂

you hit all the major points good stuff

If someone isnt good at sketching to creating those concept arts, can you still be part of the gaming industry? I dont mind sketching, but its not why I am studying in college to become a game artist.

I love to understand how things are created in video games but it worries me so much that I am not "creative enough" to be part of the gaming industry.

why is no one talking about his warframe skills?

Doing 3D mainly as a hobby i can savely say…. i f***ing hate retopology and i cant even say why xD

Learned more here in about 5 minutes then I think I have elsewhere in weeks. Good work, Tiedie.

This video helped me make a character, I’ll try and make a 3D character and try and make a game

    No pipeline discussed

  11. NoCultist on August 4, 2021 at 9:38 pm

reTOPOLOGY like in topological maps. Beyond that great video.

  12. One on August 4, 2021 at 9:40 pm

You didn’t mention skinning. After rigging you have to skin the model which basically takes the rig and tells which part of the mesh to control

    Thankyou tiedie

  14. Timothy Scully on August 4, 2021 at 9:42 pm

Neat. Question; how much of this process can be done in blender?

  15. VitalCow on August 4, 2021 at 9:44 pm

    Thanks for the help man!

  16. SebLeCaribou on August 4, 2021 at 9:45 pm

Nice idea for a video, but I think it you have worked better with you making or showing the steps one by one with one example. It’s very distracting to watch Warframe gameplay with just a couple of images to illustrate your points.

    BLENDER dont forget BLENDER xD

  18. Cyber on August 4, 2021 at 9:48 pm

Here’s a question, I know in game development that this would fall under a game designer but could this be the whole job (just creating characters) or would you need to know how to create maps and all that as well

  19. Sekar K on August 4, 2021 at 9:49 pm

Bro I want one new character please create and send me this is number +919663490683

  22. California capuchin man La on August 4, 2021 at 9:51 pm

    Where can I find that

  23. SW on August 4, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Computer arts student at uni here, as far as I’ve learned over the years if you’re making a mesh for a game (or anything really and especially if you’re rigging it) you do not want any polygons to be triangles. They need to be 4-sided shapes, not necessarily a square shape but it needs to be 4 sided. 02:45 I noticed a few triangles.

  24. Horzinicla on August 4, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Hey man its been 4 years. Did you get the job you want?

  25. Santiago Sanz Feliu on August 4, 2021 at 9:54 pm

Full process? More like an overview or summary of the process.

  26. Cain Marko on August 4, 2021 at 9:54 pm

You forgot a step point weighing /morphs

  27. Joy Nigam on August 4, 2021 at 9:56 pm

I wanted to learn this for months! Thanks! I actually did not know how do they do this before you told me about the chain of modelling then sculpting, and etc…

  28. Hydra on August 4, 2021 at 9:56 pm

So most studios don’t use blender perhaps.?

  29. Alex Vivat on August 4, 2021 at 9:56 pm

can you do skeleton of your character in zbrush and then export it to unity?

  30. VitalCow on August 4, 2021 at 10:04 pm

Same here. I want learn to graphic design

  31. Agent Zier on August 4, 2021 at 10:06 pm

Love the video man, lots of great info. These different steps and software, could you list them in the description?

  32. Isabella on August 4, 2021 at 10:09 pm

I did some concept art but the rest just seems complicating

  33. Marc Woolward on August 4, 2021 at 10:09 pm

I’m not going to do this but at least it was fun to know how it works,

Wow, what a nice overview. Loved it. Thanks

  37. 7dayspking on August 4, 2021 at 10:12 pm

Wait, are the final versions of meshes normally sculpted and then broken down into fewer faces with an algorithm? Or are they reproduced from scratch by hand using a sculpted mesh as a reference? If I could sculpt meshes rather than building them out of shapes by hand, that’d be so much less painful. All that frustrating tweaking of individual vertices.

What would be the best programs I should get to create Characters and which ones would work together the best I’m still in high school and I want to get a jump start on trying to learn how to make characters before I go to college

    Warframe

  43. Jay Ott on August 4, 2021 at 10:18 pm

No mention of weighting? Its a massive part of rigging. Or is that the animators job?

  44. Trantor The Troll on August 4, 2021 at 10:18 pm

I’m actually in the process of learning Zbrush currently, (been at it around a Year) though i’m not learning it for video games, persay. i’m an Action Figure/Statue/Mask (pretty much anything to be honest) Sculptor, but lately everywhere i get hired at, they’re asking if i know Zbrush in depth, cause the Industry pretty much over night went to Zbrush over using Clay/Wax. so i was like UGH, Great. SURE I CAN LEARN A WHOLE NEW TOOL, ive only spent uh….35+ years learning how to do it with my Hands, im sure it will be SIMPLE!

actually, it IS pretty simple! hahaha. Zbrush blows Clay/Wax out of the WATER. i haven’t so much as touched Clay or Wax since i started learning Zbrush. i’m SO happy i gave it a go! some of my fellow Sculptors (who are older than i am) REFUSE to learn it, but that is such a bad idea.. if you stop learning, you are pretty much resigning yourself to failure and death..

What would be a better pair for doing all this. maya with mudbox or maya with zbrush. what would be the more rounded program?
    Thanks in advance.

The high-resolution mesh/sculpture is often made first nowadays and then retopologized into a more basic mesh
