Very interesting review. I have recently sold my three Rickenbacker basses (a 4004L "Laredo", a 4003 and a 4003S), my Gibson SG Bass and two American Fender basses (a Mustang and a Jazz). Total cost of that lot was £11,500 sterling (currently about $14,500 US). I sold them because I have never used them since buying my J & D (the ‘house’ brand of the German retailer DV249) Mini Jazz Bass. 29" scale, two J-Bass pickups. Flawless build quality. Never need to tune it. Perfect set-up from the factory with low action, no fret buzz and perfect intonation. Amazing fretwork. Sounds better than any of the others (that are now sold). Much easier to play too with a 29" scale. Cost was £103 sterling. I bought a chrome bridge cover, a nicer pickguard (custom made) and a ‘tug bar’. Total cost ended up at £150. You definitely don’t ‘get what you pay for’. Fender and all the others are ‘taking the piss’.

    Looked to be solid body.

He’s probably playing through a $3000 mesa boogie. “This guitar sounds amazing and it’s only $100.”play it through a $100 amp and we’d hear the truth.

You know when I think of how I have thrown away 100 bucks on various items that I didnt have the next morning. I would drop 100 on this quick. I would think you couldnt make it for 100. I started playing in 65 and you dont wanna know what 100 would get you then. Inflation notwithstanding. Japan didnt have the name they have now. I cought a Kingston, Made in Japan for 75. It wasnt 1/10 as nice. My first guitar was a silvertone flattop. 15.99. Bith of these were finger destroyers. HAd to teac myself. Thanks MelBay.

I absolutely love your new guitar reviews, especially those super cheap models. These days, a hobbyist can pretty much buy all the known guitar models and stay around a gran or so. Amazing !!

Chinese kids do pretty good with cheap supplies

  7. Christopher Den Haan - Allan Drive MS (1468) on April 2, 2022 at 6:36 pm

Yeah…just give it a year….fret sprout definitely….twisted neck….you can be enamoured by an axe made by slave labour and CNC machines, but cheap inputs are what they are

  8. Windy Gomes on April 2, 2022 at 6:37 pm

I liked the trick where you used the mechanical pencil to lube the string grooves.

  9. Norman Mozley on April 2, 2022 at 6:43 pm

Been playing for 62 years, nothing like this guitar in the old days. Your friend in tone, Norman Mozley

Fantastic is relative, and I hate gig purses..the fanny pack of guitar cases

  15. southerner on April 2, 2022 at 6:56 pm

How is the action height at the nut?

  16. W S on April 2, 2022 at 6:56 pm

Don’t know why, but I keep coming back to this video. It’s just done so well and shows all the items to check, while also pointing out that cheap doesn’t mean bad and more expensive doesn’t mean better by default. But just all the little extra info like what trem bar could be substituted, using the graphite on the nut, etc. makes this such a complete video, and then the test playing as well with the bonus of a comparison. Thanks.

You didn’t comment on the intonation?

  18. Андрей карпов on April 2, 2022 at 7:02 pm

Like it or not, a guitar cannot be better for the price of a set of strings…

Grow up Darrrell and stop spewing immature disgusting vulgarity on a public video. How pathetically uneducated, immoral, and Godless.

  21. Nv Johansson on April 2, 2022 at 7:06 pm

100$ guitars in 2022 are far better than 500$ guitars in 1992.

  22. /u!s hd on April 2, 2022 at 7:07 pm

I got a Valencia vc204 as my first guitar for a hundred dollars really decent

I randomly found ya, thank you for giving me a more informed look at an electric guitar lol, I learned something today 😊

    Floyd ING it up man..

  26. Dave Cass on April 2, 2022 at 7:09 pm

hi Darrel, brilliant video, i have been in love with the guitar for 50 years or more, and have bought all the "copys" going on ebay and other sources, and a few nice guitars along the way. i always find the new fit strings let them down, but maybe its because you can play better than me ! cheers mate.

  27. Brandon B on April 2, 2022 at 7:10 pm

Much better than my first guitar in 84, a Harmony Strat copy bought at Sears. My first decent guitar was an Ibanez xv-500 two toned purple. I still play it to this day.

  28. Druncle Wallace on April 2, 2022 at 7:11 pm

The one thing it has proven, the player is the key not the guitar. I bet Eric Claptop or the like could also make this guitar cries which someone else with a million dollars guitar won’t

  29. TheTooBig on April 2, 2022 at 7:11 pm

I have a guitar that is so similar that it probably came from the same factory, differently branded though. I am just an amateur, but my friend who is professional guitarist wanted to try it and was really amazed and flat out offered to buy it. He said that it certainly wasnt a 2000 dollar guitar, but he really liked it and thought it sounded great.

  30. J St on April 2, 2022 at 7:17 pm

No. It’s not. No fantastic $100 guitar exists. You only say that cause it works. Which is surprising in itself

  31. Fight Guy on April 2, 2022 at 7:17 pm

Man oh man. My acoustic guitar is $40

  32. Curtis Everett on April 2, 2022 at 7:18 pm

I like the part in the intro where you slide the pick….that was clever

  33. Lee John on April 2, 2022 at 7:19 pm

    Where can I buy one?

  34. Curtis Everett on April 2, 2022 at 7:19 pm

    today’s cheap guitars are un-@-believable

  35. Dave on April 2, 2022 at 7:20 pm

Those pick-ups sound terrible. I would say even worse than Squires.. maybe try some shields.

  36. FC Dobbs on April 2, 2022 at 7:20 pm

I hate youtube videos where the host reviews the cheapest crap they can find. Who cares!

unrelated but you sound aggressively canadian ahahaha i love it

  38. Lalilu on April 2, 2022 at 7:23 pm

What you pay for on expensive guitars is built quality and better materials. Cheap guitars usually feel cheap and especially the frets wear off quickly. Plus intonation, tuning stability etc. are often horrible on cheap guitars.

  39. Phillip Anderson on April 2, 2022 at 7:24 pm

well it certainly sounds good for a hundred bucks, but a two hundred dollar guitar should sound much better.
seriously though decent good sounding well made guitars are going to cost about
five hundred or more- if you can’t afford that buy a second hand one for half price or less.

  40. u2cfun1959 on April 2, 2022 at 7:26 pm

You should try out the company that I recently purchased 2 DST-400 Stratocaster style and a DCT-100 Telecaster style. The necks are great, frets ends need polished, and a set up. Pickups are good as well as electronics. Tuners are better on the Strats, but I still like the Tele better. I got the Tele with coupon discount supplied from seller and paid around $100 with shipping. I paid about $140 for the Strats which have a nice translucent finish and 2 point tremolo system. They are a great deal, I plan to use them playing out instead of taking my vintage gear out to a bar. OH, I also bought a Donner Circle Looper and Drum Machine. I’ll let you know how that goes.

  41. Augustus Betucius on April 2, 2022 at 7:27 pm

So the pot metal parts need to be replaced. Probably could stand some better pickups, and the switch and pots along with it. Yes, those holes are generally used to keep the pots from turning. Also, ceramic magnet pickups – G&L used, and may still use, ceramic, magnet on the bottom type pickups. G&L pickups sound excellent, so it depends on who’s making the pickups. Every G&L I’ve owned has had them, up until the early 00s, anyway.

  42. Curtis Everett on April 2, 2022 at 7:28 pm

@21:47….how do you get that fluttering sound? That’s really cool…………..

  43. J St on April 2, 2022 at 7:29 pm

Cheap plastics. Very low end electronics but hey! HEY! This guitar is fantastic👌🙄

  44. TylerND on April 2, 2022 at 7:30 pm

I’d love to see it upgraded

  45. Dave Cass on April 2, 2022 at 7:30 pm

just to add, to other amateur guitarists, get yourself a tube amp you wont regret it !

  46. Gerald Azenaro on April 2, 2022 at 7:31 pm

I have an Monoprice Indio bass that I bought mostly to play Rocksmith with for $100 like 3 years ago and it’s been great. Way better than my son’s started Peavy. Tuning machines eventually wore out and I had to replace them a couple of months ago, but otherwise a fantastic bass for the money.

  47. Jesse on April 2, 2022 at 7:32 pm

Quality wise, you get what you pay for. It’s that simple.

  48. Richard Cowan on April 2, 2022 at 7:33 pm

Buying a guitar is like buying a wand

  49. Ryan Byrne on April 2, 2022 at 7:33 pm

Wow, when I started playing, at about 10yrs old in 1994(I got my first lesson the week Cobain died). $100 might get you a 4th hand busted acoustic with duct tape and some drywall anchor bridge pins.
Any Squier bullet, Yamaha or whatever brand was at least $300cad for a reliable, playable model that stayed in tune.
