The best tablets you can buy right now (2022)

The best tablets you can buy right now (2022)

While tablets don’t always get the same level of attention as smartphones or laptops, they’ve become an increasingly important category of devices for many families – particularly with the recent shift to working and learning from home. Their straightforward designs make them easy to use, while improvements to Windows 11 and iPadOS allow many tablets to pull double-duty as part-time productivity devices.

However, there are a lot of options out there, so it can be difficult to pick the right one. So allow us to go over the most important factors you should consider, followed by our top picks across a range of categories and prices.

Before you even start looking at specific devices, consider how your new tablet will fit in with the gadgets you already own, and how you plan to use it. For example, if everyone in your house uses Macs and iPhones, it probably doesn’t make a lot of sense to buy an Android tablet, even if you’ve been tempted by the massive 14.6-inch screen on the new Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. This goes double for anyone with an extensive library of purchased videos and music that might be harder to access after switching platforms.

Another consideration is the kind of work you’ll be doing. That’s because while all modern tablets are adept at browsing websites or playing games, some operating systems like iPadOS and Windows 11 are better designed to support multitasking and productivity than Android or even Chrome OS. It’s a similar situation for software, because while most popular apps and games are available on both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, more specialized enterprise software may only have proper support on desktop platforms like Windows or macOS.

Trying to decide the size of your tablet is also related to the kind of work (or play) you intend to do. Larger displays make it much easier to view two apps side by side, with big screens also delivering a more immersive movie viewing experience. But at the same time, the larger the tablet, the less likely you’re going to want to move it around. That means you’re not only going to want to take stock of your workspace (i.e., if you have a desk or instead plan to work from a couch or even your bed), you’re also going to want to think about how the device will fit into your everyday routine or commute (if you have one).

Finally, you’ll want to consider any add-ons or accessories you’re planning to use, which can range from detachable keyboards to things like external mics or a stylus. The good news is that many tablets nowadays offer some kind of keyboard accessory, which allows the device to function more like a 2-in-1 instead of simply being a content consumption device. Some tablets also feature things like microSD card slots that support expandable storage, or optional 4G or 5G connectivity, which can be a real boon to frequent travelers. And if you’re planning to use the tablet mainly for work, you might want to grab a USB hub for connecting all your favorite peripherals.

I’m returning the iPad Pro. One thing that apples to all APPLE products is their horrible customer service. Their people don’t know the products or even their policies. This has been an awful experience and is very expensive. So goodbye. Nearly all tech companies have become used car lot user experiences. Actually, just bought a pre owned car and it was much more upfront and user friendly. Very sad.

  3. Chad Fraser on December 18, 2022 at 1:05 am

Everyone in my family has their own iPhone but it’s hard to justify a household iPad without multi-user support. The Galaxy Tab lineup is appealing for that reason alone.

    I don’t understand the

The wisest thing that should be on everyone’s mind currently should be to invest in different streams of income that doesn’t depend on the govt. Especially with the current economic crisis around the world. This is still a good time to invest in Gold, Silver and digital currencies (BTC,ETH…).

Own a S7 Tab. It’s perfect for when I want to do something like fill out a form or watch a movie and I dont feel like opening up the laptop.

  18. PhazonBlaxor on December 18, 2022 at 1:22 am

As someone who wants do develop apps for Android and iOS, it’s quite ironic that the only tablet that can do that is SP8. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The Samsung and Apple offerings are toys, that don’t offer anything I want to be able to do with my tablet.

I get it for casual users, but the whole "Pro" of iPad should be morr like "Fun" — because that’s what these mobile OS tablets excell at; not so much on actual professional work, unlike SP8 that offers all the professional software you ever need.

Lenovo Chromebook Duet after 2 years is still the best option for those who want to spend less for a quality tablet.
    – updates until 2028.
    – keyboard / cover included in the box

    – supports USI stylus if you need it
    – the best display in this price category
    – 10 hours of battery life

Engadget and mainstream tech news are biased towards apple. I am not sure if they are receiving some perks from Apple but very obvious.

  23. Erick Guzman on December 18, 2022 at 1:28 am

1:28 Seriously you think that ipad os is better at multitasking than android? I own a ipad pro but I’ll wait until the S8 ultra is back on stock to get one.

  25. Tanawat Leelayouva on December 18, 2022 at 1:33 am

If you own iphone or Mac it’s easy to say ipad is a way to go if not it’s a stupid choice apple compatibility with other device is the worst hence its compatibility in it’s own ecosystem is the best however cheaper choice on apple product is so old and clipple by it’s outdate hardwares like that cheap screen ipad and iphone SE it’s force people to go premium and pay a lot more to get full experience without so many choices. if you are android users go for Samsung S8 it’s great it’s very flexible for compatibility but it’s not seamless like what you get on apple but it’s giving you many choice on your phone or laptop you can choose in many prices range and it’s can work together pretty well with the screen thats better than what you get from apple in same price range ( it’s pen is better than apple pencil and come in the box for free) if you want productivity 2 in 1 like surface is the best cuz it’s a laptop which can be use as tablet . If you aren’t apple user and don’t wanna pay much budget choice would be mi pad or Lenovo tablet it is better than buying an outdate ipad you will get better screen and most hardwares and no need to force yourselves into apple ecosystem (which requires much mo free money to spend inorder to get good experience with it) but if you are apple user it’s obvious ipad is your only choice and (air 5 is best choice right now)

  26. Bradavon on December 18, 2022 at 1:38 am

IPadOS is NOT better at multitasking than ChromeOS and Android on Samsung OneUI/Dex. You also need to separate Android from OneUI in regards to multitasking. They’re different. The issue with Android is optimised apps, NOT multitasking, never has been. Its just plain false. Makes me question the judgement of the video.

  27. Eric Powell on December 18, 2022 at 1:40 am

It’s foolish to buy media within a walled garden. You literally will lose money if you try to leave that ecosystem.

ipad isn’t a tablet it’s called an ipad for a reason it’s thicker than a tablet made of aluminum uses ipad os and the screen is diffferent

Love my Samsung A8 10.5, plays PS2 and PSP games beautifully, and at less than $250, it’s a steal, came with a Samsung Scoop Bluetooth speaker and poach

  37. Epic Unicat on December 18, 2022 at 1:49 am

This is a very apple biased review…. you take off point for the samsung but not the apple? Come on dude, you can do better.

  38. - StarLight - on December 18, 2022 at 1:49 am

Where is Samsung tablets ?? Lol

  39. Rony Aguirre on December 18, 2022 at 1:49 am

I like how you said the Samsung S8 is not as accommodating for productivity like windows and iPad. Like what?! On iPad you can only split the screen with two apps, compared to unlimited screens on the Tab. The pen is free. Dex is free. MS Office Mobile is free on Android only. You can plug a flash USB C drive on the Tab and work like it’s a laptop. Also you missed the S6 Lite 2022 Samsung tablet; at 300 bucks with included pen, Dex and pretty much the same features as the Tab S8 at 1/3 the price of the small iPad Pro; you can’t go wrong. Your 🍎 🍏 favoritism is showing…

  40. Bradavon on December 18, 2022 at 1:51 am

If you just want a basic tablet with a keyboard you’d be a lot better off with the Lenovo Duet 5, NOT the basic iPad. That’s a ridiculous 500 bucks when you factor in the keyboard.

  41. Wanderer on December 18, 2022 at 1:52 am

Trust me guys ipad pro mini led is far better than oled. I don’t know how but after seeing in real side by side miniLED is best for entertainment.

Tell me about the tabs not how I’m going to use them.
