The Gaming Industry | Start Here

The gaming industry’s labour force has had a year of reckoning.
The video game industry is richer than the global movie and music industries combined. And it’s still growing.
But a series of public scandals in recent years have revealed poor working conditions for the people making the games, as well as a culture that discriminates against women and minorities.
Will calls for unionization in the industry take off? The newest episode of Start Here reveals what’s going on behind the gaming screen.

  2. Theseus on October 20, 2021 at 8:49 am

what is the woman rates of gamers?? i assume less than 10%. so is that so weird that women dont work for to make a game that they will never play?? i mean you have to know your job and to like it. if you dont play games then how you would like to create them??? THAT IS NOT RACISM
and i assume that payment have to do with skills and production rates not by gender..

Of course the bosses will say you don’t need Unions, cause they don’t want workers fighting for better working conditions.

Don’t you just want to learn how to write for a gaming start up and then you realize as this video goes on and on, it’s about feminism?

  8. Sam Leshchinskii on October 20, 2021 at 8:53 am

Gosh even this topic is already picked by feminists…

  9. Andres F on October 20, 2021 at 8:53 am

Most people in the game industry (or any for that matter) get used….Prob what most people want to do (but fear) is being the boss/content "creator"

One day Just like Bollywood India will also have it’s own Gaming Industry. And I’m sure about. It is the only Industry unlike Movies and Music that requires highly technical knowledge and also it requires the knowledge of coding. This industry is going to grow much more.

Don’t know how it is a start here guide. All they are talking about is crunch culture and adding more female workers. And google is recommending to the top of the search results "how to create a game industry". That’s why I don’t love these news channels

  18. Y A on October 20, 2021 at 9:02 am

Al Jazeera is "fighting" for women’s rights 😂😅

When you begin to lose interest in gaming.. That mean you have reach adulthood and live in reality..

  20. Kshitij Shekhar on October 20, 2021 at 9:07 am

I also find it weird that these media houses take whatever women say at face value.

  21. Saint Michael on October 20, 2021 at 9:08 am

That lady from Feminist Frequency has a major problem – using questionable methods and sources to have her way.

I mean at first she was portrayed as the iron willed woman going up against a Male dominated industry. The minute she gets clap back – which is something you will *alway* get when you go around provoking people – she becomes a victim.

The UN even gave her an opportunity to present her case and guess what they said? "No, because she presented information from questionable sources."

In summary, the industry has a problem. But the way to fix it is not by provoking people and acting like a victim when there’s clap back. There are far more constructive ways of doing so. E.g. criticizing by creating.

And also lost how the video went from talking about gaming to talking about women🤨🤦‍♂️

Wait, if employees are working 70 hours a week who contribute to the development of a game,, who’s making all the money?
Also, it’s sad that gaming industry is THE most profitable. The world as we know it is invested and investing in an activity that mostly has a negative impact on people’s lives.

  33. Gulraiz Bhutta on October 20, 2021 at 9:26 am

Money to fund against men, but no fund for women gaming industry

  34. Edgeless Mind on October 20, 2021 at 9:27 am

Everyone talking about industry but not culture. How the change of culture results in more addiction and a change of youth culture and false aspiration. Paired with stuff like youtube and so on. Its all abou the fun but not about the consequences

    Which makes customers turn off

  42. Julian Mashingaidze on October 20, 2021 at 9:35 am

I love Start Here and this was a well researched video, which I liked. Though I feel the title is slightly misleading as it goes onto women in the gaming industry.

The realities are quite harsh for them. The working conditions and layoffs are also disheartening to hear

  43. KomradKyle on October 20, 2021 at 9:37 am

Bobby Kotik and Ryan Wilson could have kept thousands of employees hired minus their greed

  44. Kshitij Shekhar on October 20, 2021 at 9:38 am

6000$? LOL. Other professionals in India make over 20,000 USD as freshers. And these freshers are not even from IITs and other top colleges. Those guys make close to 100k USD, and even higher if they work abroad.

  46. TrollerSwift HasEnteredTheChatRoom on October 20, 2021 at 9:39 am

I’ve never clicked on a Youtube video with a title about feminism and had them say "Let’s take a moment to stop talking about women and talk about video games" so don’t do the reverse. P.S. I disagree.

They should do a video on the public accounting industry – the same aspects apply in the audit and assurance profession, except its even worst than gaming industry because effectively everyone ends up making less than minimum wage considering the 80 hour work weeks.
