The Parts Rainbow: Hacking a Cheap Harbor Freight Parts Organizer

The Parts Rainbow: Hacking a Cheap Harbor Freight Parts Organizer

This cursed parts organizer lurked in the background – until today. My electronic component hoarding has reached apocalyptic levels. Order must be restored to Voidstar Lab.

Join me as I reorganize my trash-tier Harbor Freight parts organizers into glorious 3D-printed, laser-cut pantheons of paraphernalia. It’s part workshop cleanup, part project log, and part confessional.

Download the files and make this ridiculous project yourself! It’s all on Thingiverse, baby: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4614214

And you get instructions! You lucky so-and-so! https://www.instructables.com/Parts-Rainbow-the-Ultimate-Harbor-Freight-Organize/

CORRECTION: Canadian Tire, not Princess Auto, gives out fake money. Princess Auto is just coupons. Boooo-ring.

By the way, give me a follow on the ‘gram! @zackfreedman has all the projects that don’t make it to video!

Get motivated to sort those piles of parts, see how a sloppy workshop can end your projects, and learn how to 3D print all the rainbows. Enjoy the gratuitous level of time-lapse montage-o-vision – over 500GB of storage was wasted on this one video, and it was absolutely not worth it.

Also, stay to the end to watch me try to remember my own chips. Spoiler alert: I don’t.

Excellent project start to finish, the letterkenny reference was definitely the cherry on top.

Hey, make that video about how you made the meshes in Fusion 360 off the reference photos. I have seen that in a few videos on other topics and well, that looks amazing. And since your an advanced cyborg from the future, it should be no issue to explain it.

  4. Redemptus Renatus on December 10, 2021 at 10:52 am

And here I thought the rainbow actually coincided with values of components in some way… Ah well.

  5. Dan Hill on December 10, 2021 at 10:53 am

So, who is gonna volunteer to sort my 25 gallons of misc. nuts, bolts, and wongles??

@ ~8 minutes. In the spirit of seeing how you’d tackle some projects I’ve thought of, but lack every requirement to complete, here are some ideas you might be interested in:

wirelessly powered phone case that houses bt/Wi-Fi enabled teensy &accelerometer. Would output fall damage to a framed 2nd replica phone that is affected by theoretic damage that would be felt by 1st phone were it not in a case.

A wearable, 3D printed gearbox that allows user to turn a bolt with the power of 10 women

Wearable Exciter/audio transducer (?) that I can use to press up against the plastic divider at the gas station to amplify (?) my voice, through the plastic guard, to put $10 on pump 6.

Nice! I am printing a 40 now… How thick is the Acrylic you used? I want to start cutting a few on the Glowforge while I wait

Maybe you’ll dream up a really nice sort of neopixel installation, that would very nicely augment your organizer project! Really good idea to use the video as a sort of project journal, where you could not only use the video to reveal this projects timeline, but then to have it serve as a master record later for not only yourself, but the rest of the World through its Wide Web. I could even feel the sort of eureka moments that you must have experienced as you came up with the friction fits and all the more subtle mechanical details that made it yours. Those drawers are super schnazzy! THANKS FOR SHARING!!

Apropos of nothing, you can buy cattle prods at Princess Auto. I’m always surprised what they have in stock.

What I like most about the color gradient is that when you’re putting stuff back, you know exactly where it goes if you have more than one pulled out.

I love the Hail Mary drawer.

Hey Zack, if you can figure out an open-source inventory solution to track your stuff IN those organizers hit me up, because I’m in that boat right now.

Looks like organising LEGOs into colours and sizes, takes ages but feels great when it’s done

  25. John Ebert on December 10, 2021 at 11:15 am

The fact that the gray/red trays in the lower center right of the center organizer are not in perfect color sequence is really bugging me.

  26. AstroPenguin on December 10, 2021 at 11:15 am

Suggestion for improvement: Make each bin addressable, with leds on it. Then when you are creating a project and you have a list of parts, send the list to the bins so the bins that have those parts will blink and you will be able to quickly, without having to read anything, know which one you have to open

    LED’S… hurts my brain.

What kind of laser cutter do you have/use?

  44. MIA Micro-FLIGHT on December 10, 2021 at 11:41 am

Man, I wish I had your amount of parts, try accumulating tiny parts over the span of 40 years, even with bin organizers it is hard to keep up with small parts unless they are clearly marked and organized. I recently bit the bullet and created my own design resistor bin system, if it was available in the way I like things, I would simply buy it to save time, but problem is I can never find what I need exactly, so I always end making my own. Your system look great….

  45. Sam Toshner on December 10, 2021 at 11:41 am

Dude you’re a funny guy and I like you. You make entertaining videos. And now I know you’re also a Letterkenny fan. Low bones.

It looks sooooo good man. It looks like those organizers from the hairdresser, where they keep the boxes of hair dye.
Im kinda kicking myself in the ass for throwing out the metal bodies to my organizers, I’d love to do this.
