The ENIAC was capable of about 400 FLOPS. FLOPS stands for floating-point operations per second, which basically tells us how many calculations the computer can do per second. This makes measuring FLOPS a way of calculating computing power.

So, the ENIAC was sitting at 400 FLOPS in 1945, and in the ten years it was operational, it may have performed more calculations than all of humanity had up until that point in time—that was the kind of leap digital computing gave us. From that 400 FLOPS we upgraded to 10,000 FLOPS, and then a million, a billion, a trillion, a quadrillion FLOPS. That’s petascale computing, and that’s the level of today’s most powerful supercomputers.

But what’s coming next is exascale computing. That’s zeroes. 1 quintillion operations per second. Exascale computers will be a thousand times better performing than the petascale machines we have now. Or, to put it another way, if you wanted to do the same number of calculations that an exascale computer can do in ONE second…you’d be doing math for over 31 billion years.

2 exaflops is like 4.3 times faster than the Fugaku supercomputer. That’s a lot, but 1not 1000 times as said here

what about the blockchain? using crypto coins to let them use or use their pc power and doing it in a big chain…

In a few decades we would be able to create a real human simulation inside a computer and in a thousand years, an entire world, a world so real you can’t tell it’s a simulation.

In fifty or so years the world’s oil will be exhausted, when that happens there will be no more electricity so no server farms and no computing. So get used to it people, our civilization is going into history’s dumpster. It’s back to the horse and cart…live with it.

  19. Stephen Jacks on August 24, 2021 at 10:24 pm

Speed is relative. The first supercomputers could barely run a word processor but easily crunched FFTs. Some Bitcoin mining operations like in North Korea and Iceland have thousands of multi Terreflop video cards.

The last Chinese "supercomputer" only had 5x the performance of nVidia Tesla system. Our project tested Linux clusters running Gimp, Perhaps nVidia writes crappy drivers. However the nVidia Gimp clusters were 5x+ faster than AMD GPUs.

At this point, cant they use ai to design the optimal supercomputing layout? I have a lot of
Faith in Ai and super computers. I strongly believe these computers and Ai will take humankind to a state we did not expect to reach as fast as we’re going to get there. Imagine an Ai that can fully understand all known elements and what it could do with just that.

  37. Stunt Panda on August 24, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Fun fact: ENIAC wasn’t the first programmable computer. Arguably the first was the Z3, designed in 1935 and finally completed in 1941, and was created by Konrad Zuse in Berlin; the ENIAC wasn’t completed until 1945. In addition the British Colossus 1 computer, designed to crack the German Lorenz cipher, was up and working in 1943. And finally calling the ENIAC "programmable" is being generous. It would take days to rewire the ENIAC to solve a different problem. Using that definition of programmable Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine could be called programmable because you could, theoretically, change the gears to solve different problems.

Can you imagine if we cracked super computing and developed a machine so powerful that we couldn’t know how powerful it was because on every calculation we gave, it would spit an answer immediately & not know how long it took because numbers that small don’t even exist & it would have to calculate to near infinity how long it took

What do we need that kind of power for ? How else are they going to continue to have the vail over our eyes and put everyone in a delta state.. while they control out very thoughts. Say no to ai and technology.. it’s not what you think it is.
