When video games were classified in the 80s. They were modelled after 4 types. The Pac-Man type, Asteroids type, Space Invaders, and the Miscellaneous type. Later came the Platform type and Player vs Player type games and Simulator types. I remember when Battlezone was considered the miscellaneous type, now it’s viewed as one of the first simulator types. Crazy Climber, a miscellaneous type, would later form the platform type games.

Modern game devs should note how many 70s games are still easily enjoyable today.

I remember all of these as a kid born in the mid 60’s. Lunar Lander had a great LEVER hand controller at the Exploratorium in SF. . Battlezone, i backed up on and away and turned to nail them, still a good tactic in today’s tank games. Breakout, I learned on Atari2600, just break away a corner and get the ball into the top to bounce around. Too many more to mention. Thx for posting this.

Personally I would substitute Space War for Computer Space. Sure CS was first, but who even played that game? As far as I know there were only a small number of those cabinets produced. I have never seen one in the wild, and only time remember seeing it during the seventies was as the game Shirl played in the movie Soylent Green.

  23. Michael Smith on December 9, 2021 at 12:50 pm

I vote for Defender ! Man that game was one of the best arcade platform games ever !!! I grew up on Space Invaders and Pong and Asteroids. Then I got a job and a Sega and played Sonic ’til HE was tired of running lol

  24. a2pha on December 9, 2021 at 12:51 pm

I was hoping to see Space War or Starship.

  25. Patrick Radcliffe on December 9, 2021 at 12:52 pm

Yeah they messed up the date for lunar lander it was not 1979 but a year earlier a resturant my family frequented before we moved in 1979 had the game in their lobby.
I would replace computer space with Space Wars as it also influenced Astroids and other two player games.

  26. J. Harbottle on December 9, 2021 at 12:52 pm

The first time I saw an Asteroids machine, it was scary as the demo graphics were mesmerising ! only 10 at the time It was 1980

What console / format is used in most the clips pls ?

  46. Kevin Wilson on December 9, 2021 at 1:14 pm

Ahh, Pong – the game that started it all. I remember the day my brother brought it home and hooked it up to our television and the family was amazed at this marvelous new technology. Nearly 50 years later, it’s barely remembered as the great, great grandfather of whatever the kids are playing nowdays.

  47. Slow Neutron on December 9, 2021 at 1:15 pm

Battlezone was released in 1980. Just sayin.

  48. James sullivan on December 9, 2021 at 1:16 pm

Lunar Lander was harder than shit.

  49. Axe T on December 9, 2021 at 1:18 pm

DUMB SLOB: Computer Space was not the first arcade game! First video game maybe. And certainly video games would have taken off even had Pong not been invented. Not sure what’s worse, the nerd narrator or your misinformation lists?!

  50. amremotewatching on December 9, 2021 at 1:21 pm

Its a pity you used an emulator for Asteroids .. because one of the most memorable visuals was the super bright vector dot that the real machines produced on a CRT thats impossible on MAME !! Same goes for Space Invaders. If you had filmed a real TAITO upright cab you would have got the amazing UV lit colour backdrop with the B&W invaders floating in front of it, which was mesmerising, and the sound made it even more addictive because of the heavy bass thump-thump sound effect that gradually sped up as the level progressed.
