I listen to your review of satellite devices it would really be helpful if you would include prices because in plans because the hardware is no good without the software and the software is no good without the connectivity

I’ll point out that one can buy for US$25 an amateur radio band handie-talkie that allows connecting with HAMsats (and even the ISS) to connect with other amateur radio operators. Adding GPS data acquisition and encoding to the handie-talkie would perhaps add US$8 BMC to the manufacturing cost, and with the right antenna one could have the ability to provide lat/lon and talk to people via orbiting satellites for negligible up-front cost. Manufacturers SHOULD be able to do something similarly DIRT CHEAP with Iridium and similar infrastructure for *emergency only* use.

In fact, in return for the special re-allocation of radio spectrum space to Iridium and others to provide commercial communications, it seems to me that like other communications services, the infrastructures should be required to allow inexpensive tech to access it for *emergency only* Just as normal consumer cellphones/mobiles have a monthly fee to support 911 and 999 calls in most countries, a similar fee could be applied to sat phones to support emergency sat call infrastructure.

  16. T Allen on June 26, 2021 at 1:08 am

Still looking for a device you buy for emergencies that is Pay as you use it, just for emergencies. That is not an add on to a cell phone. Is there one?

  17. exgenica on June 26, 2021 at 1:12 am

These are NOT "Emergency" Sat Phones. They are Sat Phones that have an "SOS" button.
    It’s a huge difference.
An "Emergency" phone is one I only pull out in an emergency. Do *_NOT_* have to pay a monthly fee for, has a replaceable battery that will last years in storage. I’d gladly pay a "per use" fee if I know it will setup and work when and where I need it, but I’m not going to pay $100 or more per month to just have it sitting in my pack not being used.

The unit that apparently REQUIRES a smartphone to work is also not what I would classify as an "Emergency" Sat Phone.

What is needed is basically, a more sophisticated EPIRB that uses Iridium or equivalent.
