Bummer I didn’t see this before the steam sale ended yesterday. I’ve picked up a selection of games for my new M1 Max to last me through to the summer sale though! 🙂 Christmas has mostly been feeding a new Cities: Skylines addiction. I’ve gone from newbie on Christmas Day evening to a 50,000 pop city with multiple 5 star industries, lots of DLCs and mods in a week (although I was preemptively watching a load of "Biffa plays…" channel so I knew that game was incoming after seeing what Santa brought).

Already had Metro Exodus which is superb, and I need to get back playing after a bit of a break. Well recommended. Also already had CS:GO (who doesn’t). So my new horde picked up in the steam sale is Shadow of the Tomb Raider, DiRT rally, GRIS, Civ VI, Project Zomboid, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Disco Elysium, Company of Heroes 2, and the free World of Tanks Blitz. Those should keep me more than plenty entertained for many months with what spare time I have. Since I haven’t played some of those at all yet and any of those for more than about 10 mins, rate my buys and which I should be playing first… (had GRIS and DiRT a couple of days now, but spent what spare time I had the last couple of days buggering about making the Xbox controller work with steam).

Oh, and I started playing Lego Star Wars castaways with my free Apple Arcade trial. Anything else on there that’s a must play let me know as I’ll probably cancel the subscription when the trial runs out.

On my M1 Mac Mini, I’ve been a fair number of games, but the one I keep coming back to is Islanders. Simple to play, but wickedly clever. Thank you for your vids; they’ve been a great help.

Is your 16inch MacBook still working? I’m a Mac person for 30 years but ,speaking as Mac repair engineer, they are prone to totally calamitous failures.

  7. Douglas Cesconetto on November 2, 2022 at 6:39 am

It’s a shame that Apple have never took seriously gaming, specially now with M1 chip, I can only imagine how good gaming on a Mac could be doing the fact that are few models and the system is already highly optimized, this is the perfect scenario to develop highly optimize games, something similar what happens with a console, for example. If Apple dedicate a team to make MacOS a next level platform for gaming, together with devs and/or a big distributor like Steam, they could take one the market considering how cheap and powerful is the M1 chips comparing to a combo Intel+dedicated graphics.

Still waiting for steam on ios. My main and only device is an ipad pro.
Is there a way you can lease a virtual windows pc an run it on your ipad?

  9. Richard Rude on November 2, 2022 at 6:41 am

Huh, Subnautica Below Zero runs flawlessly on my 2017 baseline 15 inch Macbook Pro (2GB graphics). Maybe the performance issues are due to apple silicone. Anyway, I highly recommend the game

Honestly I would get rid of everything. My TV consoles, PC, if they only took gaming seriously. I use my laptop way more than anything else. I would just have my desk and my laptop. Before I got into gaming my room was simple and beautiful, now it just has so much stuff lol.

I have a 2013 🖥. Can I play any games on this old thing? I got it because the PCs I bought kept breaking. Expecting this thing to last longer than the updates. Probably have it for at least 10 years.

Technically, Apple’s Metal API supports ray tracing, but there are no RT cores in Apple’s chip yet. I suppose that is the target for the next-gen Apple silicon

Fortnite on M1 pro in 4K can hit 110fps consistently..been having a lot of fun with it. Looks great on the 14” screen too!

    HUMANKIND

  24. Justin Strong on November 2, 2022 at 6:53 am

Hey Stewie, I emailed Feral two days ago asking if they could port Sleeping Dogs to mobile as a suggestion for an upcoming game since they’ve done it for Mac in 2016. I mean, the graphics of SD could always be lowered for mobile so there’s no way it can’t play on mobile if The Last Remnant can..

Anyway I also gave them your Alien Isolation video review as a reference of the possible games at the end. It’ll no doubt help them to decide but it’ll also earn you more views

but dude i got steam on my m1 and have been watching these vids since before this series and i feel like you miss things like project zomboid , univers sandbox ….. are you not trying out games on steam , this is the biggest market for pc gaming . the biggest problem with gaming rn is trying to find games that we can all play together i find that not being able to play the same games in a discord or for the oldies out there teamspeak ect can really kill the mood and have one person feeling really left out, i know for a fact that project zombiod is pc/apple compat i host a server for my buddy ( hes playing on 2015 macbook me a ryzen machine ) things like are really important to pc / mac gamers beacuse at the end of the day we a re just gamers trying to get the best out of our machines, and have fun. on top of that why shoulf you focas on the apple app store , when for example when im on a windows machine im not forced/limited to the microsoft store . love the vids <3

League of legends works really well on my m1 MacBook 2021

  28. gracemlc1225 on November 2, 2022 at 6:54 am

if apple developed gaming aspects of the macs, the mac would actually be undefeatable especially with the new silicon chips
there would be so many new users and old users buying
it should really be something apple starts considering

  30. Agni Research on November 2, 2022 at 6:56 am

We need a Mac developer to create a native AAA game from scratch, like Bungie did in the 1990s with Marathon, and not another port from PC. Make it M1 native and push Metal 2 to its limits. You can easily convert to iOS via catalyst, so there is a huge market to sell to. The demand for such a game is there, we just a developer to do it.

Wow, is gaming on the Mac really THAT lame? I would love getting me a big ass MacBook Pro, but gaming would be a major thing for me on that machine.

  45. Andrey Komarov on November 2, 2022 at 7:14 am

Hey! I received a MacBook with M1 Max 32 core / 64 ram last month and was somewhat disappointed with the performance in well-known games such as XCOM 2 and Starcraft 2. XCOM 2 is generally playable at 1080p, but due to the lack of support, the Mac does not know how to work correctly with lighting and SSAO (the same goes for Alien: Isolation – SSAO kills the frame rate on M1 Max). In addition, in some situations, the game runs at 10-13 fps even in the lowest settings and at the lowest resolution (I experimented). StarCraft 2 has a similar problem and it is lack of optimization. M1 does not know how to work with shaders, which greatly reduce FPS.
You mentioned Psychonauts and I remembered about the game Brutal Legend from the same developer – unfortunately it starts up, and regardless of the settings, it also gives a low FPS. I wanted to write to the developers, but the link leading from Steam to their support does not work.

you missed World of Warcraft, by far the best game on Mac

  48. Tone Loc on November 2, 2022 at 7:23 am

These games highlight how pathetic the offering from Apple is for gamers.

I am a devout supporter of Apple and hope next year to buy a decent system so I can run parallels or something else to allow window games to be playable.
