We Bought an ELECTRIC Airplane! New eFlyer 2 (Sun Flyer)

We bought a plane! We ordered one of the world’s first 100% electric aircrafts! It is the Bye Aerospace Sun Flyer 2. It will be going into production soon so we can’t wait! This plane is targeted for flight training (private pilot license and beyond) with specs and pricing competitive with the Cessna 172. What do you think of the new plane?

Exciting to see electric come to market. It’ll only become more popular as battery tech improves. Speaking of, Lithium Carbon Dioxide batteries have just been proven with the latest prototype successfully going a thousand cycles with only 10% capacity loss. The best part is they have SEVEN TIMES the capacity per weight, so good bye to range woes. Another five to ten years and they, or something better, will be commercially available; maybe by the time your battery needs replacing the new one will be a very significant upgrade!

I’ve seen an electric plane over at https://youtu.be/vgdj9HpdzvI
The advantages as learner planes are obvious…and as range increases it will only get better.
Good idea for a new channel…well done.

Buckle up guys! Did you keep track of electricity cost rise the last decade. What will happen when everyone switches to an electric vehicle? The energy establishment will make sure we keep paying a lot of money probably.. Besides did you investigate the origin of “green” energy 🤔 All the best!

I learned to fly on a mixture of Cessna 172, Cessna 152 & Piper Warrior. I still think you would be better suited to learn to fly on a gas engine plane just due to the applicable real world knowledge considering how rare electric planes currently are

Hi, I have been following the electric revolution on the ground in the 4 wheel and the 2 wheel sector ever since Tesla cars were launched and withe electric bikes as well,I am very keen on getting into this Industry. Please do let me know the requirements to have this plane marketed and distributed in India.

Long cross country flights are prolly not for this one. 70kts is slow. Great for training but flightschools refuel after couple of lessons. Charing the battery will leave it grounded for a while, no? Love the innovation

So u will have to wait for the FBO’s to install ELECTICAL outlets for them. That will be WAY WAY in the future and you will be LIMITED to PLACES TO FLY. GOOD LUCK with it.

Soooo did you ever get it? Your aviation channel doesn’t have alot of uploads. This channel had the potential to be another huge thing. Most of us car guys love airplanes to. Its part of the same sickness 😎🤟

  26. Michael Long on April 19, 2022 at 6:33 pm

So, not to be a negative Nancy, but I have a couple points to make. I am a aircraft mechanic, and view my knowledge on aircraft to be fair.
So one thing, in the numbers that you are quoting it states the inspection costs as being 2.40 per hour. Now every certified aircraft requires an annual inspection each year, and if the plane is used for hire it requires what is called a 100 hour inspection, while I realize that you won’t be using your plane for hire, and need to do that, keep that in mind. (Most planes don’t fly that many hours in a year.) And when you break it down fundamentally, the only major thing changing between a conventional plane and an electric is the Powerplant. The airframes still require the same amount of attention as a conventionally powered plane. So for arguement sake, let’s say you need an inspection every 100 hours. That means that an annual/100 hour would only run $240. I don’t know anyone, or any company that can do that cheap of an inspiration. I could see the company that manufactures it to include maintenance/cut a reduced rate for the first few years, but nowhere is that cheap to just do regular maintenance. You are still going to be using up tires, brakes, the parachute requires mildly expensive routine maintenance, (I believe they need new rockets every 5 years), the avionics/instruments onboard may still fail/ require maintenance. So in conclusion maintenance will not be that cheap, unless it is included with the sale of the aircraft. And then you have to go to there location to have it done.
Also, there are a number of drawbacks to electrics, charging vs just fill up, smaller useful load, smaller range, (hehe, a 1946 aircraft can go father on 20 gallons of fuel, (which can be mogas) than that plane), etc.
All that being said, keep flying, and keep going in aviation. Keep it up.

Dude, keep your hands on the freakin’ steering wheel. You’re typical of every little entitled rich kid everywhere. You think you’re the only one on the planet. You put everyone else in danger when you drive like that.

  29. Bryan Allen on April 19, 2022 at 6:42 pm

No airplane yet? I think you guys got snookered. There is, now, a certified electric airplane available (Pipistrel.) Too bad you put a deposit on one that has been stubbornly resistant to becoming available…

    WAY too much damn talking….

  31. john shu on April 19, 2022 at 6:43 pm

it is 300 thousand dollars for the sun flyer 2!

  32. Stan Meyer on April 19, 2022 at 6:43 pm

It has impressive specs but it’s still not equal because the endurance range is flying at 70 knots… Flying at a 100 to 135 knots would tremendously reduce its range! And then to find a good charge port it doesn’t make for a good Cruiser!

  33. Electric-Everything on April 19, 2022 at 6:44 pm

Homebuilt makes you the mfg. if you’re worried about costs that helps a lot… $290k for a 2 seat trainer is probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of.

  39. junkmail1203 on April 19, 2022 at 6:50 pm

Wait so how much are these planes? I only know 5k 2 seaters and 10k 4 seaters as deposit, but how much would they end up costing?

  40. christian gibson on April 19, 2022 at 6:50 pm

The news is that Norwegian OSM Aviation just bought 60 of these airplanes. Its range is not great, but it still sounds like a fantastic machine! Now if solid state EV batteries will ever become a real commercial product then the range could change…. The Eflyer 3 could ‘take-off’ 🙂

electric airplanes aren’t viable yet… won’t be for some time… until energy storage technology improves quite a bit… its fine for a proof of concept to say it’s been done… but it’s just not practical… get your money back…. stick to real airplanes… this guy is selling snake oil…

  44. Doug Howdy on April 19, 2022 at 6:53 pm

Laying down deposits for experimental non-certified aircraft is just plain stupid. It is very unlikely the FAA will ever certify battery powered aircraft, as they are just to hazardous and the batteries have a nasty habit of catching fire. Last February the DOT and the FAA officially banned transport of lithium-ion batteries as cargo aboard passenger flights as they have the potential to short circuit or thermal runaway, possibly catching fire and exploding..https://youtu.be/yFvlbkELG-I ..The threat still remains for all aircraft, large or small. On June 1 2018 two pilots were killed after a Siemens powered prototype eFusion electric aircraft test flight in Hungary. The plane apparently crashed after catching fire during flight resulting in the tragedy.

  45. rsowder on April 19, 2022 at 6:57 pm

One thing you didn’t calculate was the monthly acquisition cost. I calculated a 172 purchase price of $40,000 and the Sun Flyer 2 at $289,000. Based on flying 100 hours per year, the 172 is $6.71 per hour and the Sun Flyer is $48.49 per hour. Even with that, the Sun Flyer is still $32 an hour less to fly. Of course the Sun Flyer 4 would be more of a direct comparison, but I don’t have it’s battery reserve cost.

The rest of us will reap the financial benefits in the future.

  49. Loft Party on April 19, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Anybody thinking in the first minutes, after hearing " Hi we bought 2 planes." …[today]"we’re in ‘the Tesla" ,.. "if your Ferrari craps out, just park it. "…they are boasting? Or are they merely very unaware, overly PRIVILEGED young dudes? I’ve been running up to five small business companies, took every risk as an entrepreneur… for forty + years, and I STILL don’t feel I can ‘afford a plane’ !
At least it’s GREEN -all electric. The world is all Sun powered, but for too long we’ve simply burned up fossil fuel that took millions of years of sun to create- as we quickly reverse the process burning it back into CO², all in 200 years, accelerating temp rise; So AY electric vehicle, especially if powered by green hydro, solar, wind, or even nuclear- electricity…is way better! !
