What REALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU SPILL WATER in an OUTLET?

What happens when you get water in an electric outlet without gfci? YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU SEE. Can you run lights or a toaster under water? appliance & lights underwater? One of my viewers wanted to know what happens when an outlet gets wet & it’s not protected by a GFCI plug.

Have my teachers ever told me the truth?

  33. Escaping The Norm on September 14, 2022 at 4:34 am

Why would you be surprised that nothing happened? Water has an extremely high resistance so therefore a very small current would flow through it. Back when I was a kid there was an extension cord in the pool that was on because it got unplugged from a submersible pump and I didn’t know. Got close to it and I could barely feel a tingling from the electricity but definitely didn’t electrocute me. Also once had a variance transformer that went from 0-145V. I remember I was like (I wonder how many volts you can apply to the water with your finger in it before it shocks you?). I remember slowly turning it up from 0 and got all the way to 140Vac and just barely felt it…

Btw, if your fingers are dry and your not a wimp you can hold a + – 110v straight out of the wall in your fingers… The shock isn’t unbearable. I can do it for however long…

The danger though with water and electricity is if your skin is wet the resistance goes waaay down thus drastically increasing the amount of current that will flow through you and then yes a 110 is enough to kill you… Also depends on how and where it shocks you…

If you were in a pool or bathtub and directly touched a 120v source it may very well kill you but going through water to you would be very low current!

  41. I V A N on September 14, 2022 at 4:41 am

That last bit about dying if you stuck your hand in the water when the toaster was on is simply not true. To prove it, just put in a multimeter in the water and check the amount of current running through that water. You will see that it’s trivial. Electricity always seeks the path of least resistance so why would it bother going through the water and through your skin and through your body when it has a very clear path through the circuit that is immersed *_in_* the water?
