When Phones Were Fun – And Nokia Was Crazy

When Phones Were Fun – And Nokia Was Crazy

You remember Nokia for the legendary 3310 that no one could break, or for the Nokia N95 that had all the features (before having-all-the-features was a thing). But you might not remember that, for a few years in the mid-oughts, while The Killers were killing the Billboards and Google was first going public … Nokia was going a little bit crazy.

Yep, it’s time for another episode of When Phones Were Fun – and this time MrMobile’s rose-tinted glasses are focused on some of the strangest mobile devices ever to hit store shelves. From the vase-like Nokia 3650 to the leaf/eyeball/alien artifact Nokia 7600, some of the craziest cellphones of the noughties came straight out of Espoo … and thanks to a generous loan from friend of the channel (and Nokia collector) Martin, those phones spend this entire video under the lenses of Michael Fisher’s stay-at-home studio.

Join me for “When Phones Were Fun” Episode 4: a throwback retro tribute to a time when Nokia’s weird phones helped set the tone for a new generation of smartphones!

When Phones Were Fun: Episode 4 features the Nokia 3650, Nokia 3660, Nokia 7600, Nokia 6820, Nokia 6600, Nokia 7710, and Nokia 7650, all on loan from friend of the channel Martin’s private collection. I owned a 7650 back in the days. It was horrible as one could have listened to music, but there was no space to put it on and if you went over the stopping point of the slider, you ripped the cable off, which at least in Europe costed more than the phone was worth itself. So I went back to my original 3310 and was happy.

  26. LivingThroughTV on October 3, 2022 at 5:05 am

Had the 7650 myself in the UK when I was about 16. Needless to say the ability to shoot video (10secs worth), view webpages and boot up Doom on it was absolutely mind blowing to me and my friends. I also had a Samsung P300 (the calculator phone) a few years after that, which although more simple, you’d probably like from a design perspective. I’d love to send you it to review, but a girlfriend lost mine back in 2007.

I never imagined that cellphones in the US where so boring in the past. I grew up in Mexico and remember seing all these Nokia models as well as Sony Ericsson’s, they were the bomb!

  36. wolfie 81 on October 3, 2022 at 5:17 am

They pioneered smart phones. The 9210 and the 9220 were way ahead of its time. They didn’t know how to make them user friendly. That was the problem. Steve Jobs knew how to bridge the gap.

Being nostalgic as am watching this video. My first phone was Nokia 1650 and that was the days we were just thinking to have the N 95 series. Time flew.

  44. AxZel Animations on October 3, 2022 at 5:29 am

We had 6600 back in 2006 and it was my first time playing SonicN and Java games.

Jump to 2011 when everyone has Android 2.0, I’m on my way to High School with this as a gift that I asked (6670 and 7610).
I’m playing GBA, Mega Drive, NES and GBC games in there. It was burried deep down in my channel when I had so much fun just taking videos with it. It was like 2011 is my mid days of technology.

Wow I have never heard of RealOne Player for such a really really long time.

Yup nokia from nokia all the best

  46. ohtebowah on October 3, 2022 at 5:29 am

In the UK, there was a network which did a ridiculous deal for the Nokia 7600, so cheap in fact, we could all buy it without having to ask our parents permission. Loved that phone, even though it took me weeks to get used to the texting

  47. That Fuc&#% on October 3, 2022 at 5:30 am

I always chose Nokia over Ericsson(I lived in one of the Nordic countries back then) because of the battery time, a Nokia phone could last you 7-10 days before it needed charging. No other phone brand came even close to that. But then smartphones became a thing(Nobody told Nokia about it, tho) and Nokia refused to step away from Symbian. The rest is history.
