When Phones Were Fun: Samsung's "Matrix Phone" (2003)

It’s the dawn of a new century. China launches its first manned space mission; the human genome is finally sequenced; and in North America, over 50 million people lose power due in part to a software bug. In short: technology has woven its way into so many facets of our lives that movies like The Matrix are coming out to critique … and yes, consumerize that infestation.

The year is 2003; the device is the Samsung SPH-n270 “Matrix Phone”; and this is episode 1 of When Phones Were Fun! Join Michael Fisher/MrMobile for a throwback retro review of one of the earliest and most elaborate product placements in the history of mobile tech: a mobile device that pulled double-duty as on-screen prop … and cellphone you could actually buy!

Virginia Beach? Small world. To be such a futuristic phone, it lacked a lot. But, 2003 was pretty primitive for cell phones.

When I was a young, dumb private in the Army in 2004, I almost spent $1,000 on one of these second hand. Literally the only reason I didn’t was I only had $925 in my checking account.

My first "fun" phone was a red QWERTY keyboard flip open LG EnV2 phone with Verizon. That thing was sturdy as a rock, had great reception and was a beast for texting! Sadly it didn’t even have the ability to have 4G much less 4G LTE so yeah, it’s been ineligible to connect to carrier networks for awhile. But that was a super fun phone!

Moto mods were on their way to bring fun, but they dropped the ball wanting to be like every other phone company out there instead. What a shame, I was looking forward to the future of the mods

The Samsung SPH-N270 is an epic 21st century phone, but it’s a pity it’s expensive because it costs $ 544.72.
