Why 6 Volt Battery for Dry Camping – 6 volt vs 12 volt

Why 6 Volt Battery for Dry Camping – 6 volt vs 12 volt

Brief summary as to why two 6 volt batteries are better for dry camping than one or two 12 volt deep cycle batteries. The six volt battery has more life cycles (discharged to 80%) than the twelve volt and supply more power for more time. 6 volt batteries were designed for golf carts and are an excellent source for power to run loads inside an RV. Keep in mind, you will want to run a generator to handle loads like microwave, coffee makers, hair dryer, ie anything that requires high wattage.

Then why don’t they just go with 6 volt batteries in the coach’s instead of 12?

My 5th wheel came with 2-12 volt batteries. Can I still run 2-6 volt batteries with no issues? I’m assuming yes by looking at your description for your video? Just making sure before I make the switch.

  5. antonis toni on April 13, 2022 at 6:18 pm

So the 2 volt battery is better

  6. lauretta anikwue on April 13, 2022 at 6:18 pm

So you would mean somehow that I would be better off connecting a twelve 2V 200Ah battery bank to my inverter than a two 12V 200Ah battery bank for longer lifespan. Am I correct?

  7. Robert Allen on April 13, 2022 at 6:20 pm

Because amp hours does not increase when wiring two 6 volt batteries in series, why are they the better choice over two 12 volt batteries wired in parallel (where the amp hours doubles)?

San Diego is our favorite place to visit. We usually stay at Sweet Water Region Park. Maybe I can stop buy and get a deal on a couple of great 6v batteries from you? And, some advice on how to install them into a locking metal box. Thanks!

Can you show how to hook up the two 6 volt batteries ? I would need two from you with extra cables. thank you.

ADVERTURE IN CAMPING, travel trailer rental>< mammoth lakes, at my job we have 75 travel trls that we rent out, we use 4, 6volt batts on our trailers with 2 solar panels, 4 batteries is the way to go for dry camping not 2

  18. gheumann on April 13, 2022 at 6:31 pm

Completely agree – but no, 6V batteries weren’t designed for golf carts. They were widely used in cars way back when. 12V batteries didn’t start showing up in cars until the early to mid ’50’s.

Left out a lot of information dont forget them
6v are 90lbs has less then 1000 cycles cost $330 for a 330ah life is 3 to 5 years. Charge time is very slow.
Lithium battery 30 lbs each has 3000 to 5000 cycles at 100% and 2000 to 3000 at 80% last longer and cost more at $1000 ea has a 100 ah.. Should get 5 to 7 years with no problems. charge time is 150% faster then a 6v.

  27. preppersintent on April 13, 2022 at 6:37 pm

The simple answer to the title is yes they are far better…BUT ,What your not telling them is no RVS come with a charging system capable of properly mantaining those batteries…they WILL die a slow death of sulfation and impaired performance, plus extremely shortened life..The RV dealers/battery sellers will sell MORE batteries and make more profit…….all in the name of selling You a better battery.

  28. Mak Ken on April 13, 2022 at 6:37 pm

2 6 volt batteries cost more than 2 12 volt marine. Plus 12 volt marine gives you a longer over all use. Which means you wonโ€™t be dropping down to 20% of capacity as often as you state. So you will get the life cycle use out of the 2 12 volts which is 5-7 years, save money, and get a larger overall use from the batteries. 2 6 volts just are not worth the price difference in my opinion

My motorhome runs 3 12v. 2 house batteries and 1 motor battery. So would I need 3 new 6 volt batteries to convert all ? Or leave the 12v battery for the motor and then just do 2 6v for the coach/house batteries?? Also you say for dry camping what if we do both?? Will 6v system be okay if we do full hook up camping occasionally??

  35. MN Prepper on April 13, 2022 at 6:52 pm

So I want 2 batteries on my camper and you’re saying it would be better to go with two 6 volt batteries instead of 2 12 volt Deep Cell marine batteries? I will probably be dry camping 50% of the time.

  37. cubey on April 13, 2022 at 6:53 pm

The problem I have is my old motorhome has very limited options for the battery locations, without doing something like removing the furnace, building a custom sealed battery box and venting it. The origin battery compartment can only hold one 12v battery. I added a second 12v battery under the sofa next to the water tank since a 12v in a battery box with a vent tube can fit under there.

  38. Barbara Eidel on April 13, 2022 at 6:54 pm

I’m thinking about switching to 6 volt batteries on my new Rpod. It has a solar panel on the top. Will anything be affected if I go to the 6 volt berries? Thank you!

  39. Chris Roosa on April 13, 2022 at 6:56 pm

Ok so 2 -6v batteries 100ah $99 each in series = 12v 100ah battery for $200 or 2 -12v 160ah batteries for $150 in parallel = 12v 220ah so how is 6v batteries better? With the 12v batteries you gather more ah so if you were to use the 2 6v batteries to 50% but then upgraded to the 2 12v batteries you would be using less of the reserve so the batteries would last longer. So I think 2 12v batteries would be better.

Do you need a different converter charger for these??

  41. ontheedge33371 on April 13, 2022 at 6:59 pm

My question is can I use my 12 volt battery charger to charger them together once they are wired ?

  42. Double Dog Drone on April 13, 2022 at 7:00 pm

If you run 2 6 volts batteries in series and one of the battery cells fails then it brings the other 6 volt battery down and will not supply the needed 12 volts while camping. However , running 2 12 volt batteries in parallel and if one of the 12 volt batteries fail then one can remove the failed 12 volt battery from the circuit and still have a 12 volt output to run thier lights , and other lower wattage devices. Could mean the difference between being in the dark overnight and not being able to run your slide out back in.

2 12 volt V Max AGM batts with a total of 250 Ah does the trick for me off grid. Havenโ€™t considered the 6 volt option but worth a look!Thanks!!๐Ÿ‘

  46. dedalliance1 on April 13, 2022 at 7:04 pm

I spent over like 300 dollars for 2 6v Duracell batteries for my truck camper. But I can’t figure out how to charge the, or they’re just dead I don’t know. I have 2 battery chargers and tried charging them seperately and went camping but they could barely make a tiny light bulb glow and then they stopped giving any power at all. So, I’m wondering if I need to return 2 garbage baterries for a refund or maybe I’m dumb and don’t know how to charge a 6v battery. What do you think’s going on?

  47. Gunnin Wizard on April 13, 2022 at 7:06 pm

Are all the 6 volts taller than the 12 volts? My batteries are under my rv stairs and donโ€™t have much head room for taller batteries

  48. Colleen D2 on April 13, 2022 at 7:09 pm

Thank you. Looks like something we need to do since we like camping off the grid.
