I think the motion of opening a flip phone and how a character holds it can express the character so much more than a smartphone usually can :>

  2. Sl1pstream 62 on November 15, 2021 at 9:25 am

Because they’re cooler than smart phones

The longer battery life thing is true. I remember I used to be able to go almost two full days without having to charge my flip phone .

So fun fact, android phones are super unpopular in Japan. Japanese people actually buy the most iPhones per capita in the world, with over 65% of smartphone users in Japan choosing iPhones and the most popular android phone manufacturer in Japan being sony, only holds 10% of the market. Apple and Sony actually has very strict rules on how their products can be portrayed in media so many anime makers chose to use the second most popular phones in the country, being feature flip phones.

  9. Zelda on November 15, 2021 at 9:34 am

would i consider swapping in a flip phone for my smartphone? heck yeah i would… while having the nice high tech smartphone is nice and all id much rather have a simpler phone that does phone things and nothing more than that as i wanna enjoy my time spent away from the computer.

  10. Luthfiarani Khuzaimah on November 15, 2021 at 9:35 am

I thought it was just because most of the anime are usually from manga adaptations. Which means it’s pretty old, or Atleast old enough when flip-phones was still super common in JP(it still is now, but mostly for Company regulations, second hand, or the elderly, since Apple dominates JP lol). From what I see, anime that doesn’t have mangas(like Sonny boy) uses smartphones, while those who have mangas(like Horimiya) uses flip-phones. (Both are 2021 anime releases).
But that’s just my observation! I Like seeing someone else’s pov

I own a flip phone, it’s cute and aesthetic. It’s fucntionable, Its less distracting. You check you’re phone less and you can close it like boss when you end a call. And YOU DON’T GET SHANKED ON THE LEG

    *Reject modernity, embrace tradition*

  14. Genji on November 15, 2021 at 9:37 am

They still use flip phones and they are more modernized to use for their language, also a little better to be connected onto few social apps then many, but yeah it’s more local use for Japan community among students and workers. Main reason it’s easier communication, I think for customs reason… I wouldnt mind going back to get a flip phone if everyone did use them. Smart phones are conventional but really hard to meet people from local districts, and I hardly use facebook anymore either because it’s not very private. Japanese have more privacy in a way and I think they want less social interactions with foreigners because of their customs, its slowly changing because now Vtubers have come they might need a modern phone for streaming and they dont mind foreign viewers etc but yeah they got tight schedule, when you live in Japan there is no idle around unless you organize to do that for whatever reason. Time and place for everything, if I had my shit together I would do the same 🤣 I wish I lived in that envoirment in a positive way. If I remember a lot of people from Japan mostly students where using flip phones a lot in 2012 still, and in 2012 everyone used smartphones or the normal touchpad, I dont even think in the west they ever where popular and you had a lot of dev’s from America and other regions in Asia develop and release the phones. Most people in Japan didnt care because they already have what they needed and did enjoy simple life as mentioned. Not that I hate smartphones but I wish I held onto a flip phone generation a little longer.

I had flip phones from middle school all the way to high school graduation and I honestly miss them. I barely use any of the capabilities of my smartphone outside of calling, texting, and listening to music.

In comparison on how mobile phones look like in Japan and US in animation, Japan did it the best. In many anime, the designs of the mobile phones, from cellphones (what do the Japanese call them) to the "garakei", a.k.a. Japanese flip phone, look very well-detailed, nearly mimic the real thing.

But designs of the mobile phones in cartoons in the US, there was no effort as all.

This was one of the reasons why I loved anime back in the 2000s, starting with Shakugan no Shana in original Japanese dub, not English dub.

  25. chop suey. on November 15, 2021 at 9:50 am

because in Japan flip phones are still really common even though they have iPhones and Samsung’s. they’re smaller and less fragile than touch screens so i’m assuming that’s why they’re still around there.

  26. Hunter Ericson on November 15, 2021 at 9:53 am

Yeah it’s cause flip phones and land lines still exist.

  29. odinking gaming_2012 on November 15, 2021 at 9:56 am

    Flipphones are custom

  30. TopGearAE86Turbo on November 15, 2021 at 9:56 am

I’m using an AU KYF31 (green color) for like 2 and half years, but of course, I do own a smartphone for work purposes and stuff. my Garakei last 7 days of battery life as a phone for call and text (which has 1500mAh ), and mildly use on the internet browser. plus add a charm strap too and stickers too 🙂

btw in fact in the usa there a new tred doing on call Smartphone detox where today kids buy dumb phones or KaiOS phones to detox themself away from soical media and other things there smartphones push them to do on a hourly base, and unlike smarrtphones you can block the numer or turn off the ringtone and more when being cyberbully and so on.

in fact semi smartphones are making a comeback now in areas like china, india and many other parts of the world that is not the EU, usa, cannda

This was something that was always strange for me too. lol Thanks for covering this topic, surprising (or rather not surprisingly) after thinking about it a simple answer.Though for me I never had a flip phone, I had a brick nokia phone in highschool. Then got a smartphone in College.

If I live in Japan I’ll definitely swap my smartphone to flip phone because I still think its cool. Here in my country, I would probably look stupid or too poor for using it.

Before i even watch this, i’m just gonna say that in japan, PEOPLE STILL USE FLIP PHONES. in japan, flip phones are really high tech. LIKE THEY’RE BETTER THAN IPHONES. (In my opinion) ALSO THEY BE SO CUTE IN ANIME AND THEY ARE SO AESTHETIC.

Its just a cultural difference the flip phone is the best design a phone could ever be. The Japanese use their flip phones specifically for contacting people not for entertainment like westerners do, they have a computer or a tablet they can use for entertainment while the cell phone is a utility device for contacting people

  44. zephyrus the ghost on November 15, 2021 at 10:19 am
