Why I Don’t Use A Smart Phone | Ann Makosinski | TEDxTeen
Imagine all the things you can do…off of your phone. Parents be warned.

Ann Makosinski is an 18 year-old student, innovator and entrepreneur. Her first toy was a box of transistors. From there, her interest in science and creating arose. One of her friends in the Philippines got a failing grade because she didn’t have any electricity or light to study with at night. As a potential solution, Ann invented a flashlight that ran off the heat of the human hand – the Hollow Flashlight. The invention won her age category at the 2013 Google Science Fair, as well as numerous awards at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair. She appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and was named one of TIMES 30 Under 30. Ann hopes to manufacture her flashlight, bringing the invention to developing countries and including them in emergency kits. Ann also invented the eDrink – a coffee mug that harvests the excess heat of your hot drink and converts it into electricity to charge a phone. Ann debuted the eDrink this October on her second appearance on the Tonight Show.

Watching this on my phone rn
Who’s watching in 2022?
You are chinese, dont call yourself canadian
Dig those high heels 👠
Wonderful keep away from smart phone.
It’s 2022, where are you woman?
She probably use it now since technology has developed so much. It can be also use to be more productive, organized and manage time.
Smartphones are just tools, such as screwdrivers or hammers. They can be helpful or dangerous. So they are neutral. The real problem is: how do you use or abuse them? Are you always connected to social media? Are you constantly distracted by your smartphone? Or maybe you only use your smartphone when it’s supposed to be used? I almost never use my smartphone, but I’m improving my english language skills a lot, just watching TED talks on my smartphone. The key is not always in the sentence "less is more". Give a child a piano and maybe he will become a great pianist. Give a child a computer and maybe he will become a great software developer. Give a child nothing and, who knows? Just talk to your children. Play with them. Teach them to be more creative.
Life before smart phones and technology was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nnuch better
Ur cool Ur creative inventor.
She has learnt more than all my 31 years in just 18
Is hard for me since I have social anxiety and especially being human interaction but that’s why I be using the most of my phone but I berly try to manage myself but is hard at the same time especially during life if I a had job it wouldn’t difficulty for me
Staring at my personality. An upbringing of construction/ introverted but domesticated activities and piano and similarly to my upbringing. So to raise a child with innocence and outgoing creativity and sincerity and dedication to fix world problems.
Thank you! I am 12 years old without a phone in 2022 and now I feel better with the idea of not having a phone in middle school. Even though I was told that I am not getting a phone till I am 16, I still feel better than I was before..
Did you make your own computer in order to download this video on YouTube???
People just dont know how to use their smartphones….
Wonderful. Congrats Ann Makosinski
Jeez, those heels look uncomfortable.
I would if I only could.
Some people can live without a smart phone in this world but some lovers can’t live without a smart phone 🥰🥰
Invent better tooth brush
So if it wasn’t because of my phone I couldn’t watched this and know I should stop using my phone as often as I do it
And fastforward to 2022. She’s on socialmedia too… Unfortunately nobody is completely safe from this.
Look who’s the cool kid now!❤️

No one should use it at least not the way that they’re making us to use it now in days
Now she uses Instagram daily
Excellent Ann – be proud, to not belong to the modern folk disease, the phone zombie generation living in another world, it’s both scary and dangerous, youth today are mentally ill as many even get killed by phone and "social" media addiction. We need to be anchored in real life instead. I have the same style as you, just a Samsung XCover brick phone, but seldom take it out, I keep it home like a landline. Sad people were FORCED to leave the landline which had only benefits – no harmful radiation, no lags, interruptions, untrustful connection, bad sound, and, let me repeat: NO brain cancer risk radiation. Let’s remember to have SPEAKER ON and keep phone away from our heads 😉
Does anyone make a sandboxed flip phone that is new… ish?
Am 19. The amount of people addicted to tiktok is scary. Very inspiring and very pretty.
You are talented girl
but it’s difficult for us to be without smartphone nowadays as we are mostly using it for classes, assignments and even for a business deal. I am always wanting to try to live a life without smartphone but the situation doesn’t allow me to do so. btw, she’s a true inspiration & her parents are so cool
Youth addicted to phone
I think she wanted that we will make use of our time for inventing or creating rather than keep on our phones and get addicted on it because it’s a waste of time especially when it’s lately a fake news.
Very interesting how this person can make these things if i was told to make something from scratch I would not be able to do it
Wow, cool, I would do it too, step by step, less using smartphone…
Ok let’s be real fellas. We all clicked cus she looks cute.
Thank you
Smart phones are literally turning people into zombies. There’s nothing sadder than seeing a couple in a restaurant or a pub having a drink and all they do is look at their phones. They don’t want to, or have forgotten how to have a conversation. They have nothing to say to each other. It’s so sad and depressing. Obviously kids and teenagers are addicted to their smartphones and couldn’t possibly function without them. Their phone is more important to them than oxygen. I go to the gym and I see women in there making videos. Not actually doing any training, just pouting at the camera and reminding their followers to make sure they hit the like button. I am old enough to remember a time when the only phone most people had access to was a payphone – if you could find one that hadn’t been vandalised. If you knew someone in your street with a landline they were like royalty. Some people could not possibly live without a smartphone but I can and do. In fact, I don’t need a phone at all.
Kids: iPhone

I was distracted 11 minutes and 57 seconds watching this presentation on my smart phone and feel it was time well invested. I enjoyed and appreciate her life story. I confess I have an addiction to listening and learning. Thank you for fulfilling my need.
Her parents was was very intelligent, as everyone can see, they create a genius girl!
The world thanks for that. Keep doing that Ann
I was not familiar with social media until I was 15, when I can say that I was much more creative and eager to explore. The later you meet, the better.
you do! I see you on Instagram 😀
