It is true, but the batteries will be unmarked and there will be 6 of them. And they do have alkaline, which is a very toxic, odorless, and invisible substance. So please be careful if you plan to do experiments on them.
Edit: 6 1.5 volt batteries which creates 9 volt (1.5+1.5+1.5+1.5+1.5+1.5 = 9)
